I work for hewlett packard as a computer tech. i've been there 5 months now, but i'm worried about losing my job. i've missed several days over the months that i've been there, and have been late a few times. there are two reasons for this. one, vehicle problems. i've been late because of my old vehicle breaking down a couple of times. the other is that i have serious problems with depression and anxiety that come and go in phases. i've missed several days because of this. my team lead had a talk with me today and said once our supervisor is aware of this last time being late, i will be out. i do not tell them about the depression and anxiety problems. i either tell them it's my vehicle or i tell them i wish to not talk about it. i've seen a psychologist in the past, and they simply stopped making appointments for me to come in. i've tried meds for depression but they made my anxiety exponentially worse. i try to deal with it on my own now, but it doesn't always work, hence the attendance problem.
i've never applied for unemployment benefits. my question is, would i be able to qualify for unemployment benefits if i lose my job due to my attendance problem? |

I can't speak for the US benefit system. If it's anything like the UK one I would imagine you'd be OK to claim unless it was deemed you'd made yourself intentionally unemployed. If that was the case you would have to wait a few weeks.
However, why don't you go back to HP and be as open with them as you have been on here? HP are a big company, they may be able to help you and if you're a good worker it will be in their interest to help you. If you're already resigned to your fate then you have nothing to lose by trying. Then go back to your doctor and tell him you don't think your meds are working. Maybe you need some more assessment there. You display an incredibly fatalistic and pessimistic attitude - seemingly always looking for an excuse rather than a way to overcome a problem. Get your meds right and you may be able to foster a more positive outlook. Try and make the most of this situation and don't give up easily. |

| I guess that the only benefits of being unemployed are that you have a lot of time on your hands and you can use that time to gather up more diplomas and certificates, you can spend the time lost with your family and your loved ones. Are there other benefits than these? |

i too have fought the giant depression monster.we are about 50/50 in the wars........
i suggest you open up and be honest with your managers.you never know, one of them too may have been where you are,and you should make them aware, not as in having a ready made excuse, but to be open and honest and perhaps keep the job.maybe see if you can get your therapist and human resources and your supervisor all aware and maybe you can salvage this.you really have nothing to lose, because i know what you will be feeling like the next time you dont care and feel like not dealing with the world.try to keep a regular daily schedule, and even if you go to work, and are not very productive, that is better than not being there at all.
i wish you the best, most people dont understand it,and dont even care when we feel this way.hang in there
