Hi there,

I recently had an interview with a software development company for a Junior Software Engineer position. Unfortunately, I was notified that I would not be called back for additional interviews due to lack of experience. I was wondering if it is appropriate to ask this same company to consider me for an internship in a similar position where I can gain more work experience. If so, how long should I wait before asking? And will this make me look desperate or just eager to work for the company?

Thanks,
Pete

Yes, good idea, but bear in mind this has exposed a situation you may encounter again.

What that company can give you is a better definition of the qualifications they were looking for. You can use that as a template for your next move.

Strongly suggest you do some more spadework on career entry points. You may have just encountered a tough competitive interview, but the information will be there from other employers.

You didn't do too badly, anyway, you got at least to first base. They'll be reasonably receptive to anything which isn't arguing their decision.

The followup should be reasonably quick, before you get lost in the filing system, and while you've got names to talk to.

I think that asking for an internship is not necessarily bad. They said you needed more job experience and an internship is how to gain some. Also, it appears that you are interested in the company this way. I think eloquently wording your decision to apply for an internship could turn out to have very positive results if you communicate it properly.

You can certainly ask. I wouldn't wait at all.

I'd definitely recommend asking. It can't hurt anything, really. It's usually surprising how flexible companies can be when they need to.

I would suggest getting in contact as soon as possible. This way you will be fresh in their minds and aware of your current skills.

Never be afraid to ask. The worst they can do is say no and thats the end of it you never have to see them again. Even if they don't have anything for you they might have friends in the industry who be willing to take on someone who is keen, or if nothing else give you a few tips on where to go to find experience.

Simon's suggestion of asking while you are still fresh in their minds is golden. do not wait too long, act as soon as possible!

Try to put forth as good an image as possible of course, if they call you back for a refresher interview.
