Hey guys, great forum here, looking forward to hearing your views!
I have just finished the penultimate year of a 4 year MSci in Physics at Imperial College London. I have no work experience - never worked in my life (I know, I know, never mind, I've just been lazy) and can safely say I have good people skills, performing arts skills (acting and dancing, although have not done it in ages) and anything else which comes with a Physics degree. I'm ambitious and work hard/properly at whatever I'm doing. But heres the catch - I don't know what I want to do!!
So I'm looking to get some valuable work experience this summer, and would like your views on how high I should aim, and what you would do if you were in my position. Clearly I want to aim high, but I'm aware most jobs which fit that category require you to have previous related work experience. So I am under the impression I must start at the bottom first, with something simple, like working in a bar, shop etc. Am I right? OR, I can work with a startup company who will not pay me any salary (usually), but will give me an experience which is apparently greatly valued by employers everywhere. Working in an entrepreneurial environment in a small team. Sounds good.
But my dad and some friends thinks the latter are just cheapskates who are looking for free labour, and that I won't gain much from working with them. Because I lack experience, their argument sounds equally reasonable to me, so I'm a little lost...
Other relevant info
- I don't know where I want to end up career-wise, so just looking for valuable and enjoyable experiences which will allow me to grow.
- I really know nothing when it comes to jobs, any help no matter how small will be useful.
Thanks |

You might try something related to your schooling or try to find an internship to gain job experience that is relevant to your degree. Check out local ads and the internet for jobs; check individual company websites and ask at school at the career center if you are thinking about going the internship route. Not all internships are paid but you can gain some very valuable experience this way.

Hi,
You are in the same position as millions of students!
It all depends on the market, your luck, your mindset.
You never know what the job search market will throw at you !
I would of course start looking for jobs that are related to my degree.
Working in a bar or in a shop ? - Why would you do this to yourself after studying hard for 4 years ?
Working for free, to get an experience. If you do not find any other jobs: So be it. Only for a couple of weeks not more, just the time to prove yourslef I would set a definite timeline and a definite pay after the trail period though.
Have you started looking for jobs ?
Do let us know about your progress, a lot of people will see these posts in the future and will be inspired!
