Free Career and Job Search Advice

Hi there,

I really don't know what to do here. I graduated this year and recently started my first proper full-time job, however to say I've made a mistake is an understatement! I desperately wanted to get in somewhere to get my head down and work to get some experience. But this just isn't working out. At peak times it's taking me up to 90 mins to get in, the people
are not nice at all, and now I'm doubting whether this area of work what i want to do. I feel it would be best to cut my losses and look for something else now before I get any deeper, but I'm not sure about notice periods etc, will I be entitled to the pay for what I've worked so far? I stop on
Friday for the xmas period and that will only be 3 weeks I have worked here. It was so hard to find a job in the first place and now I'm annoyed that this isn't working out. I just don't think I can carry on here when I'm really not enjoying it, and I'm travelling for two and a half hours per day for not great money.

Any advice from anyone would be great!

Just make sure you give them a proper 2 weeks notice and communicate openly and honestly with them about the reasons why you are unhappy. You always want to leave a job on good terms if you can.

Advice - Find a job closer to home with better pay! Very Happy

Try to hang in there until you find something else, which is damned near impossible, isn't it, when employment such as yours sucks both the time and life right out of you.

And personally, for me, when I did find something else (and you will because good things still come to those who wait and who trust in that "something" greater than employers and governments), I'd walk out without so much a "thank you very much." It's highly unlikely you'd ever want to go back, right? And no one will fault you for moving on when you find something better just the same way people have become conditioned to accept "downsizing" and "restructuring" and moving overseas as valid, albeit "regrettable" reasons for companies throwing people into the street.

You got "experience," just not exactly in the way you'd hoped. But don't fret. It gets better. And you'll be wiser for it.

Take care of yourself and truly, do be patient, okay?

As this is your first job it is probably a good idea to stay there until you find another job.

Even if it takes you a while, you are gaining experience & can add to your resume.

If you leave before you find a job, it may be harder to find another job plus if it takes you a while you'd have a gap of unemployment on your resume.

In the meantime see if there are ways to impove the situation or if there are other openings within the company.

Since this is your first job, and will be the only one on your resume when you move on to a second job, it is preferable that you leave it on good terms. Dedicate your spare time to looking for a second job and see what you can do to make it possible to find a new job in the next few weeks to a month, if at all possible.
