Everyone wants to earn more and rise faster in their place of work. But to do that you will have to put some things in place. Promotion and higher salaries are what everybody will be struggling for so you have to stand out and do enough to deserve fast promotion and increased earnings.

• It Begins With You: the heights you reach in your career will be determined to a large extent by you . The actions of your bosses at work will depend on how they perceive you. So it is important you understand that you alone hold the key to your future. Therefore you have to determine to give in your best whether supervised or not. Eliminate all weaknesses that might affect your performance on the job.

• Take care of Others: After yourself the next important person(s) that will have some reasonable influence on how far you can progress in your career will be your co-workers and your superiors. The recommendations you receive from these people will count either towards your success or failure.

This article may not be able to teach you how to make friends and influence people so I would advise that you read the all time classics by Dale Carnegie, ’How To Make Friends and Influence People’. You will learn a lot on how to interact with the people you meet in the course of your work.

If you take care of yourself and your relationship with others that is all you really require to advance to the level of your dreams.

ngjobsncareers,
Great advice, i agree, especially about your managers perception about you. In the same way we treat people differently based upon our perceptions, managers are no different.

I am a fan of managing your manager. I don't mean bossing them around, but making it easy to manage you. We know what they want, we know what they are trying to accomplish. If we make their job easier (which is what we were hired for), they will make our lives easier.

Below is an excerpt from a recent blog post on how to be pro active with your manager. Trust me, they will appreciate this initiative.

Be pro active with your manager. Take the initiative to set regular update meetings with your manager and they can be just 15-30 min. I gurantee your manager will appreciate these steps.

Set up a regular meeting with your manager. It may be 1 or 2 times a week depending on your schedule of projects. It may be in person or in email. Just keep them updated.
Let them know what you were working on since the last meeting (should be something that is important to your manager)
Update them on what you are going to be working on till your next meeting
Give yourself some feedback on what you think you did well and what you would have done differently.
Confirm with your manger if you are working on the correct goals for that month, quarter, etc.
