Are they allowed to "CHECK" your salary history?

Ive read insome interview books, that said some employers will state they always:, "Check references & salary history". Can they really (are they allowed) do this & do they do it, call your old employer & ask him how much he was paying you? Does it happen, & doesnt it defeat the salary negotiaiton process?

Yes they can do it, and it does not necessarily mean that they will do it nor that it will hurt you in future negotiations. Do know that sometimes a former employer will only give them limited information, it just depends.

In the UK this is unlikely to happen. Most employers won't want to reveal their salaries, particularly if you are moving to the competition.
