Hi , I've just got home from work and found a letter for an interview next week!

I graduated from uni last year studying sociology and the job is for a care officer in a childrens home. Its the first interview I'll have had for a job I want to do and can sort of use my degree with. (at the minute I'm stuck in an office job)

Anyway, theres a schedule for the day:
9.30 tea/coffee
10 Written piece
11 Group work
2.10 preliminary

Written piece?! Preliminary?! Never had an interview like this before and its scared the pants off me!! Any1 had to do anything like this before?? I get so nervous and scared at interviews, I think its gonna be a nightmare!!

Please help if you've had to do this before!!

Sometimes an interview like this is a good sign. An all day lengthy interview like this should not be treated much different than any other interview. The biggest difference lies in how much time it consumes. MAke sure you are on top of things and well researched before the interview.

Hello there

I agree that an all day interview is a really good sign. Regarding the written work try to think what the topic is likley to be. ie What would you ask the applicant to write about. Prepare two or three responses. I should imagine the topics will be related to the job so think along those lines. ie. How would you handle a particular situation/incident in the home etc.

This is becoming a more common type of interview. It has the advantage of being structured, and it's a bit less stressful, ironically.

This is actually a systemized screening test. The advantage of doing this is that you'll be getting a look at something which is definitely becoming part of the interview scene for big organizations.

The logic is that the group environment is more friendly, which I can tell you from experience is true. It shares the load among people, and you'll find it's much less of an ordeal than it sounds.

One of the other advantages is that you get some breaks, so you can wind down and recover a bit. The tension levels are a bit better distributed, even with tests and the written work. You don't have to endure the levels of intensity in normal interviews.

Bear in mind, also, that you're working in an extremely demanding industry, and this level of scrutiny really is necessary. This is probably a good sign of some progress in the field.

Don't sweat it. You know your stuff, that's why you got the interview. The rest, you know.

I've been to a couple of similar assessment days with companies. If you graduated uni you can handle the written part no problem i would imagine.

There might also be some team work, for example when i went for an interview we had to make bridges out match sticks. You might not have to but if there is any team work, remember to give a visible contribution to the task and don't sit back as they watch your every move.
