Select the best networking place

You can benefit from networking in you career and business by going to the relevant places for your specific business or work. This includes exhibitions, presentations, workshops, meetings, club gatherings, and shows related to your career or industry. You should also attend the meetings and presentations where the people that may make use of your services or enhance your career will be. If you are an estate agent, then for instance also attend talks on the building industry since you may get in contact with developers looking for land or agents to sell their houses.

The emphasis should be on valuable contacts versus numbers

Don't treat people that you meet as merely numbers. Give each person the attention that he deserves. Listen when they talk, and show real interest in their work or career, their lives and their future. If you go to gathering places to see what you can get out of people, you will not benefit from networking. You need to sow seeds of trust before you can expect a return.

Create a good initial feeling about you
If you want to benefit from networking you must create a good impression from the start. Give a firm but not a hard handshake. Make eye contact, keep your hand gestures open and be friendly without being loud. Always try and remember names and features about people. Seek something positive in each person you meet. Enquire about the other person first before you start talking about your interests. Ask open questions that will provide the person an opportunity to discuss his business, dreams, future plans, and interests. People enjoy talking about their careers and businesses and will in appreciation of your interest also enquire about your business and career.

Learn how to summarize
You must able to provide a short and effective introduction and a clear explanation of what you do under one minute. The first part is about the "what" and the clients and second part has more detail about it. Your presentation should never sound like a rehearsal, but should be honest and memorable.

Get in contact soon after the occasion

The event and initial contact should be followed up. You can do this by sending a note to the people you made contact with at the gathering. Include a reference to the conversation you had and if you didn't provide a business card, you should now. Contact the persons within seven to fourteen days and invite them to lunch, coffee or a meeting. Don't use it as a sales meeting since you are still building trust.

If you then also refer people to them and help their career or business grow, they will recommend you and you will benefit from networking.

Hope yuo enjoy all this information, all your comments are welcome !
