| I've been doing some thinking lately. It seems that most employers want someone with a college degree anymore. Is this true or am I just looking in the wrong places? I'm just wondering how essential a college degree really is and how many of us here actually have one. |

| I believe that a college degree is very important for the job, because employers can see from a look if you are qualified or not for the job. They don't have to ask you related or sepcific questions for the job unless they have a hard time choosing the right guy for the job.My advice is try to have as many degrees as you can because they count. |

Indeed, people have formed a wrong idea about the necesity of college degrees but the wrong thing doesn't stand in the degree itself, but in the person looking for a job.
Of course they are important! Depending on what you want to do with your life, a college degree is essential.
If you want to work as a maid in a hotel, you don't necessarily need it ) If you want to be a teacher, doctor etc, then guess what? Exactly.
The problem aroud the college degree's necesity has arisen from the fact that people don't know WHERE to look for an appropriate job (which fits their education level) or simply DON'T WANT to work so as to come to the same level.
Then...there are the employers...some of them...who consider experience to be much more important than education....but they forget the fact that experience comes from learning, especially in the case of a specialized college.
Bottomline...you need it. |

Howdy, HWM!
No college degrees here and based on my experience of working with and for those with degrees, choosing to not go to college was the second-most brilliant thing I ever did. The first was everything else.
There is an arrogance, a radiating aura of perceived superiorty among nearly every single college graduate I've ever encountered. Their focus on the degree and the higher paychecks it's supposed to bring them has blinded them to a very simply truth: Not everyone in life puts career and money ahead of everything else. But more often than not--again, in MY experience--those with the degrees inevitably hold in disdain the rest of us who, for whatever reasons, have no such formal education.
As far as I'm concerned, it's a national tragedy that college education and degrees are required for so many areas of employment in which, as old folks used to say, "experience is the best teacher."
I guess all I'm saying is this:
Those of us without college degrees but with money enough to pay the bills, surrounded by family and friends whom we love and who love us? Well, we already consider ourselves rich. College-types too often want wealth which they hope will make them rich and again, all too often, those are the folks who, when they reach my age, complain and whine the loudest about the "life" they didn't have while being so busy pursuing and fulfilling that perfect career.
I sometimes wonder if Faust's "deal" was nothing more than signing college admission papers. |

| I have a degree. I found that it is worth nothing--experience is what employers want. Regardless of whether it's a job a person could already do or quickly learn to do--if they haven't done it before in a work situation, usually for several years, all the degrees in the world won't save them. |

Most employers do want to know that you have been to college and successfully completed a program of study. Sometimes the job offered to you might not be in relation to the degree; they just want to know that you are responsible and can be dedicated enough to complete such a task. If you are hireds in a field other than your chosen course of study, many employers will offer additional training to you to make sure you fit what they need.

Keep in mind that you are not limited to a small area when you do your next job search. Best of luck... |
