Hi everyone,
I'm trying to figure out what I should do. I have a PhD and am currently in a post-doc position. I am also pregnant, due in January. After my mat leave, I have another 2 yrs of post-doc contract available, if I want to stay that long. As a result of this whole situation, I'm not generally currently applying for jobs.
Nowever, a few weeks ago I came across a position that I would absolutely love, so I thought why not apply? The worst that could happen is to not get it, and it would not be the first nor the last, most likely.
The deadline for applying was Sept 15th. I applied by that date. On Sept 21st, they relisted the job (including requirement for a type of experience that in the previous posting was considered only an "asset"). On Sept 22nd, I got a call from somebody I later figured out to be the company I applied for. Unfortunately, they never left a message, and the person who answered the phone could not remember exactly the caller ID (it shows up on the phone when they call, but cannot see it later on).
Yesterday I got a call at home at 6pm from the same person. That's how I finally figured out who they were (this time I had the correct name). I was not at home, and they, again, did not leave a message.
Today I called them back, and left a message, because I really want to know what this is about. But they did not call back.
So... what do I do? Do I call them again? What does it mean that they call and don't leave a message??!!
Sorry about the long post, but I really have no idea what the etiquette for such a situation is.
Thanks a lot. |

This doesn't make a lot of sense, and the general lack of organization doesn't look too good. Some people really are that inept on phones, but these are supposed to be business calls.
Any idea what an "asset" might turn out to be, despite a few obvious inferences from their lack of phone skills? In fairness to the employer, having a "professional vacuum" doing their recruiting probably isn't their idea. Suggest you upscale your inquiries to a manager, go around this mess.
The strict etiquette at this point is you're entitled to an answer, as an applicant. This is business, and the onus to show some social skills is now on them. |
