Hello All
I have a problem that I was wondering if anyone had any advice for. I worked as a staff writer for a newspaper for awhile and did a great job. Unfortunately the job was temporary and now I am searching for more employment. Further, the company has informed me that they are unable to provide any references due to company policy. While I respect this and understand this, it puts me in a very bad position. I really need a reference for the jobs I am applying to and I feel very cheated by this policy. I asked if I could use a coworker as a references and was informed by human resources that they are also not allowed to give me a references. I would think that they could give me a personal reference off-record at least?
Does anyone have any suggestions or comments on this? Is there any way around the company policy? I don't think I would have worked for them had I known that I would get no reference.
Thanks! |

The employer is likely to be contacted by anyone you apply to for employment, so in a way, they will be a reference anyway. Some companies choose to stay away from being references in case something doesn't work out. They cannot be sued.
It's a shame, really.
Why not contact your previous supervisor and ask if you can draft a letter and have him/her sign it?
