- More than three-quarters of employers are put off a job candidate by poor spelling or grammar, according to a recent survey.
- Ensuring these basics are correct won’t gain you anything - it’s expected of you!
- Get them wrong and you’ll be alienating a massive 77% of potential bosses.
Resume / CV tips: spelling
1. Double check any words you are not sure of. Use a dictionary if necessary.
2. Automatic spell-checks are great if you know how to use them! Context is everything.
Resume / CV tips: punctuation
1. Choose whether to use it or not. For example, do you use a full stop (period) in people’s titles eg Mr. or Mr? Make a decision and stick to it throughout.
2. The summers latest style’s - do you see anything wrong with this sentence? If you don’t see the errors in this sentence you need help with apostrophes.
Resume / CV tips: general help
1. Write your resume over more than one day. Keep coming back to it afresh and edit it where necessary.
2. Always ask someone else to check it – they will help you spot errors and inconsistencies. Translated / ESL or EFL CVs often need a native English speaker to check them through. |

I knew about these things and I bet a lot of the people coming in here do as well...but I agree when I say that so many job seekers forget about this important matter and send some CVs that look like scratches...
To me the CV is the mirror of both your personality and your ability of being professional so it's crucial that you don't have the mentioned above mistakes in the CV. How on earth will an employer choose you if you have already made the first mistake before even joining his company? |

Exactly, employers often use these criteria first to cut down the number of CVs on their desk - they don't want sloppy workers!
So no matter how hard you work on the content of your CV - if it's messy, inconsistent, and your spelling and grammar are poor - you're shooting yourself in the foot before you start. |
