| There is a post within the company for which I work for which I would like to apply. I am updating my resume and cover letter but I am not sure to whom shall I address the cover letter. It is the first time for me that I am applying for a post within the same company I work for and am not sure whether I should put a “to whom it may concern” or address it directly to the person whom I know will be reading it. Is this inappropriate to do? Any thoughts. Thanks ### |

Since you are sending it internally, I would try really hard to find out exactly who will be handling it and put their name on it. I just did this myself, and the problem I had is that there are several people just in my district that handle internal apps [and we are a nationwide company!] so I addressed it "Dear Human Resources Manager:" and hoped that would do it. I recommend against using "To Whom It May Concern" on any letter, as it sounds very impersonal and like you didn't even attempt to find out anything about the company. This is my answer, what do the rest of you think??
