Hello everyone,

Very nice and professional site with lots of advice you have, very impressed.

I am 18 and from Sheffield in the United Kingdom.

I am currently in work but have been wondering for a while what people think to my CV, so thought id post it up and see what everyone here at CV Tips thought...

Ive formatted it to look pretty much the exact same as it does on my proper CV so you should get a pretty good idea.

Capita Business Services Ltd Sept 2006 – Oct 2007

Employed initially as an advisor for PC World Department, various job roles including answering inbound calls, making calls to stores to check status of computers in for repair and other varied services, also dealing with customer enquiries regarding stock levels in their nearest stores, then transferred to The Tech Guys Customer Services as a customer service advisor, new roles included calling different workshops to get a status update on machines in repair, chasing items for customers and informing them of the actions we could take then moving forward on these, also taking customer complaints and dealing with these in a timely manner and informing the customer exactly what I could do regarding the issue at hand. During this time i had stats to keep to such as Average Handling Time – The time taken to deal with a call, Units Per Hour – Amount of calls taken per hour and Call Work – Amount of time dealt with admin issues such as dealing with letters, writing notes and dealing with customers case issues such as chases.

Capita Business Services Ltd (Continued) Oct 2007 – Nov 2007

Transferred to new department, The Tech Guys Rapid Response, new roles included providing technical assistance over the phone to customers in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, including how to reformat the computer, run a recovery on the computer and how to remotely fix programs, if the problem could not be solved over the phone then I would have to book out an engineer with the correct parts for the task, this included both new and re-furbished parts. Providing both hardware and software support for Emachines, Advent, E-Systems and Packard Bell pre-built computer systems.


EXPERIENCE

Web-Design –

- Design of multiple websites for a web design company, examples such as http://www.spacialhosting.com, http://www.mga.org.uk, http://www.teenzo.org, http://www.aaradio.net and http://www.shadow-alliance.info.
- Complex HTML Knowledge, can code a website completely from scratch, experienced in the use of WYSIWYG Editors as well as professional design programs such as Adobe Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks and Photoshop.
- PHP Knowledge, Can look at and understand scripts and how exactly they work within a very small time constraint, can then modify these scripts for exact use, such as changing a design of a PHP coded website to suit business needs, can also make and develop scripts for uses such as statistical display and database display.
- Basic JavaScript Knowledge, Can code and understand basic Javascript for uses such as displaying times, dates and countdowns.


Web-Servers –

- Apache web server – Complex apache knowledge, modify server files for use on a small, medium or large scale deployment.

Operating Systems –

- Linux Operating System –Operate Linux command line and make modifications to a Linux server operating anywhere in the world, a personal owner of a Linux Web server based in United States of America in the Savvis Texas datacenter.
- Windows Operating System – Complex knowledge of a Windows server, can use remote desktop applications to work remotely on a server and make changes to server settings and roles, also a personal owner of a Windows 2003 server based in United States of America in the Savvis Texas datacenter.



E-mail Systems
–

- Experienced in use of Microsoft Outlook express and Microsoft Outlook professional, setup automated scripts for collection of data via these systems.
- Experienced in use of Lotus Notes, create databases (Team Rooms) for important information as well as email management.

Networking Knowledge –

- Experienced in network operation, setup and managed a home network consisting of Wifi Network and Wired network, this has 5 wired computers and 2 wireless computers attached, also experienced in creating an effective networking solution for a small to medium sized business.
- IPX – Can create a wired network using the IPX Protocol, this includes setup of network IP’s, DNS servers and DHCP Servers.
- TCP/IP – Can create both wired and wireless networks using TCP/IP Protocol, this includes setup of multiple computers on separate IP’s, setup of network routers / switches, configuration of DHCP Server and DNS Servers.



Computer Maintanance and Construction –


- Built computers from base components.
- Repaired and replaced parts for computers upon faults occurring.
- Ran home computer workshop for maintaining computers, updating computers and providing custom built computers.

Hi Matt,

That is a great CV for an 18 year old. Well done! You've got some great experience.

What I would say is that I was turned off straight away by the sheer volume of words. As a recruiter I would probably read it but then start skimming because it doesn't make it easy for me to do my job. Of course, when I start skimming I'm also missing things and that means the CV doesn't live up to its potential.

I've gone through countless recruitment processes and 'thick' CVs come through all the time - often getting skipped or, at best, skimmed by recruiters.

Make it easy. Cut down the words and make the formatting simple.
