So I work in Online Marketing and have been doing it for the past 5 or 6 years.

I've moved about jobs too much over the past few years but am forced to do so once again due to some crap happening at my current place of employment.

I've been for a few interviews and got offered four different jobs, two of which I have now turned down but two of which I am finding it incredibly difficult to decide between.

Essentially they are two very different roles. One is a Senior Account Manager at a Marketing Solution provider that I know very well. I saw it as the easier option and did actually turn it down but they have come back offering more money (about £12k/30% more than what I am on now..). I know that I would enjoy it there as I get on with all the staff exceptionally well.

The second option is to go and work with two of my old employers in their new business. It's a start up, so it would be hard work, but the salary is about the same as the other option above. The real difference here is that it would mean equity in the company and seeing as the driving force behind it has already sold two of his companies in the past (for £2.5m and £1.5m) it could be a big deal. I have also really enjoyed working with them.

I'm really at a loss what to do - I need to decide towards the end of the week and it's really deciding between the easier option (with good cash) or the harder option (with equity).

Any suggestions or advice in how to decide is welcome!!

Thanks
J

Hi James,

No one can decide but you!

You have to decide what you want first.

Once you establish that it will be pretty easy.

1. Would you like to take a risk ? (can you afford it, money wise, career wise)
2. Would prefer to work with friendly staff in a more secure environment ? Do you have a family which depends on you for your income)
3. In your opinion does this start up has a shot at success ?
4. Are there any other issues tied with the job offers, distance from home, fringe benefits ?

I'm truly not trying to sound flippant, but have you thought about just tossing a coin and letting the "powers that be" decide for you?

At times like this, I think of the story in the Bible of how the apostles decided on the replacement for Judas. These guys who had performed all those miracles and stuff simply drew lots. Very telling, I think (and whether or not you believe anything Biblically-related or not) about the power of "faith" in a something/anything greater than ourselves.

I've rarely been in a position such as yours, one in which you feel like you really can't lose either way you go, yet somehow there's always that nagging sense that it's inevitable that after you choose one, you'll wish you had gone the other way.

Just know that whether you turn left or right, it's all going to work out splendidly for you. Nothing but the best.....

One other thing to consider is you know the one working environment already....but why did you leave it in the first place? If you can remember why and it was bad, then let that help you make your decision.
