I am trying to find out if Florida is passing a September 2009 extension for UE. Does anyone know whats going on with this? I heard that there was supposed to be an extension but can't find anything confirming or denying it.
My fiance and I are in Florida and he has been out of work since July 2008. 100s of applications submitted and still no job prospects. The economy is absolutely horrible down here and the few jobs that are left don't want to pay anything. Salaries right now are not even enough to pay your rent or mortgage, which is really sad.
I just graduated in January with my legal studies degree and went back to school for my Masters. Hopefully by the time I graduate with this degree, he will either find a job or I will find a better paying one, before my student loans go back into repayment.
I just found this url: http://www.house.gov/mcdermott/pr090910.shtml
Does anyone know how you reapply or is it automatic? |

From the look of the Florida UC website, they have an Extended Benefit application process.
Unless there's something there I didn't see, the normal process in FL for extended benefits is a new application. That's not quite as bad as it sounds, because if unnecessary, should be no damage done. As a matter of fact, we've discovered that UC generally gets back to you pretty fast when you lodge a new application.
Check out this FAQ, "Who is eligible for Extended Benefits": http://www.floridajobs.org/unemployment/EB/EB_FAQ_Answers.html#2
This really isn't the most articulate thing I've ever read, and as you can see a lot of it is date based in terms of entitlements. From July last year, would that be right for the EB year conditions? I'm assuming the first tier ran out on or around January 2009, and the next phase continued after Feb 22, 2009. If so, it looks OK, but the way this thing's written, I'm guessing.
I think, in terms of your post, your fiance would be OK to lodge an application, on principle, because there's not much of September left. It looks like that's the normal process, and extensions are the exceptions.
UC can't do anything themselves, until that extension is passed. They don't have authority to pay or give advice, unless it's written into law.
Congressman McDermott's bill is designed to cover this, and should provide retrospectivity, but that could mean a gap period, too.
Six people going for every job, no wonder your fiance's having a hard time finding anything. We've had people on here lodging hundreds of apps, and not getting a phone call.
Good luck, |

I think the date refers to an legislative approval for payment of benefits, and the September situation has been caused by lack of movement in approving another extension. In effect, it means that's what's in force at the moment. A lot of states are having budget problems as well as the usual wrangling. It looks like FL is in the midst of doing something, but hasn't done it.
Know what you mean about reapplication. There are two scenarios I can see for anyone in this position:
(a) The money runs out and a reapplication is unavoidable.
(b) The Extended Benefits thing is supposed to operate as the catchall default for any situation where the extension of benefit isn't automatic. Which would be this dopey situation, if/because there's no other information.
Either way, it looks like a lot of people are going to be guessing what they're supposed to do. Meaning the processing alone is going to cost FL a fortune, because there's so many people out of work. |

Paul,
Thanks again for all your help. We actually received the benefits application in the mail today which instructed my fiance to go and file for the EB benefits. I went and filed for him and it gave us a confirmation number. Hopefully this will get the process going. The website displays February 2009 still both on the site and when the confirmation goes through, so apparently they still have not updated it.
Thanks again and have a great weekend. |
