I'm am in Maryland U.S.A. and I work for the Maryland State Government. I recently learned that there are people doing my job in other parts of the state who have half the workload I do, yet get the same pay and benefits. I have filed a grievance which is going to go nowhere. They claim they don't have enough money to hire more staff in Baltimore City where I work. What can I do?

If the summ you are expecting is legally set on paper, you might as well force them to give you a decent salary for the work you do. For example, in my country, there is something called "minimum guaranteed" when it comes to salary and by no means is a company to offer you less than what is stipulated by law.
Also....there are some salary ranges specific to certain jobs, also stipulated by law . An accountant is not to be given less than 75k a year (just an example). There is also the pay per hour way of calculating your salary. And if you work more, you should get more, right?

Unfortunately in the U.S. there are no wage laws other than minimum wage. A good example is me...I'm an administrative assistant. I make a bit over $9/hr ($19,000/yr). I've seen openings for administrative assistants to make $6/hr. I've seen openings for administrative assistants to make over $30,000/yr. One's pay depends on where one works, and there's no rate required by law for any specific job. Technically one could be president of a company and make minimum wage, or a janitor and make $300,000/yr.

I wish I had an answer for you, Jeff...I'm not sure there's anything illegal about what they're doing, unfortunately. Here's a forum where you can get advice on labor laws: http://www.laborlawtalk.com/index.php?
