Hows it going, Im 20 years old i dropped out of high school a few years back and recently got my GED. After learning I scored near perfect on an exam that an 8th grade student could probley complete just as well Im stuck. I have been doing both Baking and Mechanics for the past 3 years and don't realy wish to continue with a third shift greasy life. I have looked into the medical field for 2 year programs only to find out that I need algebra1,2, Biology, and Chemistry to even be considered for admission into school. My other option is always a trade, go to school for a year or two, get out and work 50-60 hour weeks until the end of my days. My reasons for leaving high school were for social reasons not acedemic. I passed all my classes with the exeption of history one year but could not deal with the people. Now looking back and having more confidence I would have done things differently but I would like to think that there is still some hope of furthering my education for a less physicaly exhausting life. I have met plenty of people and have plenty of friends who have wasted 10s of thousands of dollars on college only to not be able to find a job or they simply give up half way through. My strong points are math and problem solving but Im not sure if i have a chance now that I don't have a diploma. If there is any advice someone could give me on where I could possibly start up school and not end up wasting 4 years and $50,000 to be back working third shift because the education I have wouldn't be good enough or that i simply didn't choose the right courses or career to have job security, I would greatly apreciate any words you can offer.

Hi sunny,

I'm thinking that if you have the possibility, you should have a fast course done. One which could finalize with a diploma in a specific area. You should think about what you would like to do and something which comes to thicken your experience in a specific domain, and choose some disciplines to help you be considered as having done them as if in high-school.

Take what you know and what you like to do and roll it together into a future job. You do not have to spend a bundle of money; see if you qualify for any grants or financial aid and maybe start at a small local college part-time until you can get used to both work and school. Starting out small can also help you decide what you want to do. Get your required classes out of the way and maybe during that time your career goals can develop into something more specific. But you will be better off by going to college.

This might help you decide what to do for a career path:

Yes, you can either choose to go to a part-time college or you can choose the option of some specialize trainings, finalized with a diploma to certify what courses you have done and how many hours. Meanwhile, search for a job, and you specify in the resume that you have entered the training and you are now in the process of your own education in the field.
Good luck!

thanks for the advice, I've decided thats pretty much what i'll be doing, working part time and completing all the necessary basic classes i need to further my education over the next year so I can enroll in a two year course in one of the many medical fields. this site has so far been the only one to give me any feedback relating to what i need to hear. Id reccomend it to anyone.

sunnyd, where are you? It appears that you might be in the USA.

Here is a link to Health Sciences Careers in North Carolina, which will be very similar to the rest of the USA, and possibly the rest of the world.

You will see that there are many jobs in the health care industry that require only 1 or 2 years of college and return with a good salary. (Look at the starting salary for Dental Hygienist!) The blue rows on the chart are the high demand jobs. Red rows are currently in low demand.

Click on any job in the list to get lots of information about each job.
