So you have been fired or laid off. Even if you have a big amount saved back in the bank in anticipation of the unexpected, beocming unemployed for any reason can be scary. There's no guarantee that the time you are without work will be a short one, or that unemployment will come through and help you out. Even under the best of circumstances, unemployment benefits do not compare to the salary that you just lost out on. What do you do about getting income between jobs?

First, panicking is not going to help you get very far. You have to come up with a feasible plan or life as you know it will soon crumble. There are a lot of things that need to be considered. One of the best things to do right off is sit down and make a list of your bills. You need to prioritize what you can before deciding how to be getting income between jobs. If there are unnecessary expenses you can eliminate or reduce, do it as soon as you can. You can change small things, like eliminating full service cable to basic service, trying to spend less at the grocery store, and driving less or spending less at restaurants. There are many small changes that can be made that will help you save lots of money before you even begin looking for income. After deciding what you can cut out of your budget that is unnecessary spending, the list should be prioritized. There are unshakable expenses that you must anticipate, including a house payment or rent, food, and car expenses. After getting together a list of expenses and a well-trimmed budget, then you need to try to figure out the red tape that accompanies filing for unemployment benefits. If you think you are eligible for unemployment, file quickly as the process can take time to get started and you want to be without an income for as short a time as possible. Once unemployment benefits begin, they are not so bad. It is the initiation process that can be a headache.

As for getting income between jobs, there are a number of things that can be done while you are job searching and waiting for unemployment benefits to start. You can do odd jobs if you posess a certain skill set. Maybe you are good at plumbing? Run an advertisement in the local paper advertising your services as a handyman and maybe this can be a way of earning a few dollars. Maybe you are good at taking care of kids? See if any local daycares or schools need a little help. Then there's always small jobs like when you were a teen: part time work in a restaurant or a paper route may provide small income, but a little bit of income is better than no income at all.

You may feel like you are being pulled in a bunch of different directions, or like you have lost your sense of self in the midst of all these changes. Just try your best to remain focused. You might have a friend or two designated to help keep you on task and remind you of priorities, such as minimalizing wasteful spending. And more than anything, dedicate yourself to a highly organized and efficient job search. The only way these uncomfortable, unemployed circumstances can change is through hard work and determination, and only you can push yourself to search for a new job that will improve your life.
