Ok successful people, here's my story.
I graduated a few years ago with a degree in marine bio (I'm 27 btw) and after graduating took some time off to travel a bit and try to figure out what exactly it is I want to do with my life. After a year or more of slacking generally, I get a job with a biotech company (HPLC specifically) and was there about a year. I did not leave on good terms unfortunately.
The one good thing to come out of it was that I realized labwork was just not for me (chemistry anyway, a lab filled with aquariums would be great). To make a long story short, I've spent the last year and a half out of work, scraping by on what corals and fish I can sell, which isn't all that much. I still live with my parents because of some overwhelming student loan debt, but need out or I will go insane.
I have no real references, and the only job experience I have is in a field I hate (other than workstudy in college and small time aquaculturing out of my house). What would you do in my shoes?
I'm probably being somewhat vague but I don't want to ramble on. If anyone can offer any advice it will be greatly appreciated. Or if you need more info to go on, ask away. Thanks in advance.

You could have your loans temporarily deferred due to your financial situation and that may help a little bit. That can at least make it a little bit easier to get out on your own.
As for the other part, I am sure there is more that can be done with your degree than simply research. I would be trying to find out exactly what. You may try to research your degree a bit online and see, or see what kinds of companies are connected. If there is an alternate interest that you have, maybe a bit more schooling in that subject so you can pursue a career that you will enjoy? I think you have nothing to lose at this point.
