I went to chef school and came top of my class and I could not get work for one year, after graduation.

These industries are most likley to hire ex-offenders :
Mining
Construction
Manufacturing

These industries are most NOT likley to hire ex-offenders :
TCU
Wholesale Trade
Retail Trade
FIRE
Services

Chef or no chef, you have to start from scratch my friend and prove yourself once again. It is not easy to do but one has to .... do what one has to do .

Gee I suppose they would run away. Why? They freaked out. They probably don't know how to deal with this issue, so you need to help them out. You need to help them relax and trust you and not be scared of you.

The past is the past and that is what your past is now, the past and put it in the past.

Let them know (this is IF they find out that you were in jail), what you LEARNED from being in jail or what you learned from doing wrong deeds. If you can show them that you learned things, repented so to speak, that this was 20 long years ago and that you are now a different person with a long future ahead of you, that you are hard working, dedicated, willing and able to work, and that they can depend on you for being at work and so forth, they MAY give you a chance at least as a temporary or trial position.

It is VERY good that you continued on and went to Chef School and learned a new career. It may depend on what sort of an employment one has as to whether this would be an issue or not.

Let them know what you have learned from your mistake and assure that them you will stay out of trouble.

Do you feel the past is over and gee 20 years is a very long time what a horrible thing to have went through. Perhaps you can help others going through the same type of problem and help those people out. Perhaps you can find some sort of a "club" that offers support to others, you may find friends there to listen and talk to.

I just wanted to say that I think it's a crying shame when somebody spends a lot of time in prison learning a new trade only to find that they can't use their education on the outside because only certain industries are likely to be interested in hiring ex prisoners.

At the very least, there should be some kind of follow up service whereby some kind of ex-prisoners association finds companies who are willing to employ those who've been taught a skill. I hate the thought of having wasted good tax money on teaching somebody perfectly good chef skills for them to end up working in a mine somewhere because employers won't go near them. What is the point?

Sorry, this hasn't been helpful to you but things like this really make my blood boil. It's very unfair to you and it's a waste of the taxpayers money.
