I just graduated from college with a degree in Geography and I have always wanted to work overseas. I have skills in English teaching ( part time ) and I'm very good with the computer.

I have never been out of my own state but a couple times. I need some information on how to go about working overseas. Do I need an agent? Where do I start and what do I do?

Thanks for all your help! Ray

Hi!
I think I can help you if you're interested in teaching English abroad.
I've been working abroad for the last two years in Korea at a university, and loving it.

I think first of all, I want to know- is this likely to be a short term or long term venture (i.e.less or more than 18months?)

If it is only a short term plan, I would recommend that you look for work in Korea. There are a lot of well paid jobs here (check out Daves Esl Cafe, and go to the Korean job board). Be sure to research the school first though, to check out its credentials.

If you are looking for anything longer than a year, I would suggest you get a masters of some description - it doesn't necessarily have to be in teaching, it could be in another area of interest.

Very often if you travel abroad, a masters degree is very important, and will open up the higher levels of employment to you. You'll be able to teach in a university in Korea with just a masters.

Hope this helps. If you want more info, especially about korea or English teaching, please let me know.

I've been working in China as an English teacher. The money here is decent if you find a good job. You don't have to work many hours, average 16-25hrs a week. You might get 7000-10,000RMB thats equal to about 1000-1400 USD a month. Korea you make more money, but I've met people who have been to Korea and prefer China...

They say the girls are better here : P

More difficult than anything is making sure that all legal documents are filed before you leave the country, in regards to passport, visas, etc.

Start applying for jobs now, and see what happens from there. I hope it works out for you!

I think a very good way to have en English teaching career abroad (if you are from the US) is through the Peace Corps. It is a government program with many perspectives and opportunities. It is worthwhile exploring.
