The pay is absolutely chronic!

I was refused the position last May and wrote to them saying I could do the job and that I would advance my career by attending college. The job was offered as a permanent position with a lot higher salary than the one I am on.

They finally decided to take me on - on a 6 month scheme and then told me after 5 months they were keeping me on. I asked was I going to get a wage increase and they said - you haven't been here a year yet! so I had to sit and wait.

Well at the end of this month I will have been there a year. I have been told by other employees of the company that there has been no wage increase in 5 years. I am now starting to worry!

I really do love my job (Employment Support Officer) but I just cannot survive on the pitance they call a wage and anyway the job was not offered at that wage to start with so can I get them to up my wages at the end of the month ?

I don't want to have to leave because the people are great there and the job is great too, but I am really struggling on this training wage.

I have also advanced my career by gaining a teaching qualification and taking driving lessons, but the company has not paid for anything, even though I was taken on so I could gain these things.

I am at a complete loss as to what to do - has anyone any suggestions here?

I would be very grateful

Based on what the other employees have told you, sounds very much like you will not be receiving one. Based on what you were told when you were hired, they promised you one so you have every right to ask for one. You might mention it again at the one year mark. If nothing happens, take the experience you have gained over the last year and start looking for a similar job role elsewhere that will pay you better. Because if you don't get a raise, consider your colleagues to be telling te truth,a nd don't expect a raise for about the next five years! Ouch.

Thanks for your advice Lexa.

It is such a shame because the job is great and it is what I love. I thought I was so lucky when I got asked back for the job, but it seems as if the company were just using me and taking every penny they could for themselves from my expertise and I don't think it is fair at all.

I have started looking around for another job but it may take a while and I may not fit in as well as I have done in this particular job, but it will be their loss as nobody else will work for such a pitance with my new qualifications.

Anyway I will wait until the end of this Month and see what happens and then I will ask my Boss a straight question and see what the reply is - if it is a negative one then I am going to have to rethink my position there.

I will keep you posted and thank you once again for your reply - much appreciated.

And employers love to feign confusion about why they can't keep good people. They lie and they're tight-fisted, money-grubbing, greedy jerks (for the most part) and expect all of us to accept it and be "grateful" that they "give" us jobs. Oh, it makes me want to scream....

Find something else--and you will--and get the hell out of there and never, ever look back.

Hi Randy

I am in total agreement with you.
I do get frustrated that there are a lot of good workers out there who really are conscientious and do a good job, have no time off sick and get treated like dirt by the employer.

Then they have the gaul to look surprised when you say you are leaving.

I will get another job although I do love being in the job I am in now but I just cannot survive on the money they call salary.
