Hello there all,

First of all i have a huge thankyou to say to all of the information with regards to interview techniques on here, i had never done a formal interview in my life, due to DJ'ing and never needing to do formal interviews for gigs/jobs etc.

Anyway, im a 20 year old studying business at university, looking for an internship which is for someone who is in university and doing a 4 year course, where they have to take a 12 month work experience. I applied to one company... the largest footwear/sportswear/equipment producer in the world and managed to get the job out of 50+ candidates.... how i did it, i really dont know, but from the feedback given from the employers, preperation and enthusiasim for the job were my key's.

Anyway, im exstatic ive got the internship with them for the next 12 months, and have been asked to come in for half a day to sort out a few formalities on the 3rd august. Now the first problem is that i had previously told them i had a holiday booked on the 11th august until the 25th august, going to ibiza Laughing .... anyway, they said whilst on the phone just now,

"ok, well the monday you get back is a bank holiday"... " so would you be able to start on the tuesday?"... now, with me not wanting to screw up or lose the job by saying, "actually, could i have a bit longer so i can recover" just said "yes thats fine", but now am thinking, im going to be in no fit state to start work the day after coming back from my holiday, and surely it would be better to start a few days after and make a better first impression?

The question im asking you is, should i do this and if so, how should i go about it?

The second question, is with regard to the salary, which has not been discussed at all during in either of the two interviews or when they offered me the job on the phone just now, again i didnt want to seem rude on the telephone or in the interview, have i dug myself a hole by not asking?

Any help would be greatfully appreciated,

Many thanks for all the previous help on this website!

Adam

This is where some diplomacy and some restraint on your part are going to be required.

Ibiza you can visit any time. This gig is a once in a lifetimer, so it gets the VIP treatment.

There's no way you could come up with a good reason for being in the process of reincarnation on your first day on the job. Not easy, but not avoidable, either. You need to be in working order, with no bits missing, when you show up.

If necessary, come home a bit sooner for some DIY rehab, but don't blow the gig.

The salary bit is a bit more straightforward. You could check that out when you go in on 3 August. Alternatively, you could ring up and ask, say "Sorry, forgot to ask about the salary, I was so excited about the job".

All you have to do now is survive Ibiza, (more or less) and arrive, vertical, breathing and articulate, on the Tuesday.

Thanks for the reply, you are completley right, and what i am going to do is take it easy on the last few days of my holiday! The main problem is my flight arrives at midnight of the day im going to start, therefore meaning im going to get no sleep prior to starting work hardly. Anyway, i wrote this letter to the contact i was dealing with, do you think it sounds ok?

Dear Maria,

I am absolutely ecstatic that I have been offered the internship with Nike and am greatly appreciative for the chance to work for such a large, global corporation.

Further to our phone call yesterday I have encountered a minor glitch with my start-date for the position within your accounts operations department due to my holiday.

I have just checked my flight times for my holiday, to double check that the dates I gave to you were correct, which they were. The problem is, the arrival time; I arrive back in England at 23.30 on the 25th August. I feel this may cause problems with the start date of the 26th August that we negotiated yesterday and was curious as to whether or not we could re-negotiate the start date to co-inside with this development.

Obviously I will do anything to keep this job, so if this is going to cause problems by changing the start date, I will stick with the original date that we negotiated. The only reason that I ask to change it, is that I would like to make the best impression on my first day, being bright, awake and ready to work. I feel that due to the late landing time the night before, I will not be as alert as I would be on any normal day.

If it is possible, would we be able to re-negotiate my start date, in order to give me chance to get prepared and ready for work on my first day.

Yours Sincerely,

Adam
