Hello fellow job seekers,
I’m about to go into my junior year at my college and I think I need to start looking for an internship. I know I want to get into sports, especially basketball, so I figured a good place to look would be with the National Basketball Association.
I checked on their website (found here) and they offer some good info, but it really doesn’t go into detail. I have no idea what to expect. They just say that you need to be a sophomore or a junior and you must have good computer skills and good grades. I think I’ll apply to get into the program because it would look great on a resume, especially since the field I want to get into is related. Does anyone have an idea what I should do to prepare?
Thanks
Aaron

Yeah, looks good, and very competitive. We checked it out for you, and you'll definitely earn your credits if you can get it.

This is the Career Opportunities page:

http://www.nba.com/careers/internship_program.html

This is a quote:

Quote:
Applicant placement within an NBA Department is based on interest, experience, academic achievement and the NBA’s business needs. All positions are located at the NBA League offices in either New York City (midtown Manhattan) or Secaucus, New Jersey.

This is their PDF with some contacts:

This isn't the kind of application where second guessing will work. Everybody's a bit different with their requirements, and some of the big internships are exactly like business contracts, no room for error.

Suggest you check this out and get in direct contact with NBA to make sure you're giving them what they want to see. Even a phone call will get some sort of guidance.

The more you know the better your preparation will be.

It'd be unkind if we were to give you information which might be great in theory, and nothing like what NBA wants.

Generally we advise people to be in contact with employers to reduce the disinformation levels.

The risk, and it's a killer, is that you can do a lot of work based on theory, and find out too late that they wanted something else.

You need first hand information and you really will have to check it out with them, thoroughly as possible.

This is a prestige gig if you can get it, and you'll learn something for sure if you pull out all the stops, which it looks like you might need to do.

This is well worth a shot, but don't guess about how to do it.

While you're at it, just so you're sure you can do this, and because someone will ask you when you apply:

Is NY/NJ OK for you?
You can get there and do the internship with no major issues?
You can cover costs?
This takes you where you want to go, no sidetracks?

Good luck,
