You first get called for a chat, then a test and then the big 'I' that determines everything.

Its understandable for one to get nervous prior to and during an interview, this usually leads to the display of all sorts of innappropriate behaviour which the 'interviewee' might be unaware of, but very visible and irritating to the interviewer. So what shouldn't you do when sitting in that room in the presence of those people who will determine your career?

1) Don't be unneccessarily friendly- Interviewers/ recruiters are usually friendly, they will usually try and make you feel relaxed and comfortable, however, you should remember that they are professionals and they will be watching your candour and demeanour to see if your emotional quotient is suitable to the job at hand. Remember to smile, not laugh out loud ( They are not your pals), sit straight and answer questions confidently, do not make jokes, nice or otherwise.

2) Don't use poor language- It is mportant that you can articulate the english language properly, although most interviewers will not correct you if you use wrong grammer during an interview or if your command of english is not good enough. I can assure you that your ability to articulate may be your saving grace in an interview, the next candidate may be more experienced but if for example you are being interviewed for a position in a multinational company, your spoken and written English may be what will give you the edge.

3) Don't speak negatively about your former place of work/ job- If you are looking to change jobs, the worst thing you can do to yourself in an interview room, is to speak against your current place of work, your boss or your colleagues. It simply tells the interviewer that you are insurbodinate, ungrateful and you are not a team player.

4) Don't lie- If you do, you will be found out. If you lie about your pay package, your age, your qualifications, your relationship with your team, whatever, it will come back to haunt you at a very wrong time.

5) Don't answer Phone calls during an interview- Switch off your phone as soon as you get into that organization for your interview appointment. It will help you concentrate on what you have come to do. Plus it's just rude to answer your phone during an interview. Period.

6) Don't act desperate- While you should conduct yourself with a certain determination to get the job you want, you must make sure never to make yourself seem desperate. If you are currently looking to change jobs, i.e you currently have a job while being interviewd for another one, you must refer to (3) above, you must not seem to be desperately unhappy and ready to leave immediately. You must have an attitude that says, 'i'm not being treated badly where i am coming from', ' My career is in good shape right now, i'm just looking to make it more robust' , ' i am not paid badly where i am now, i wouldn't mind a raise, but i'm not earning peanuts'. This sort of attitude deters any interviewer who might want to take advantage of you by offering you a low pay or a low job cadre.

Yes you are looking to get a job, but don't shoot yourself in the foot!
