hi, i'm new to the board and well, new to the "real world"
i went on 1 interview before i took some traveling time after college. i just got an email the other day saying i have the job. the problem is that the job is 50miles from me and with the salary they are offering i could barely afford to relocate and live on my own. Other than asking for more in salary what other ways could i offset my costs?
Is it unheard of to ask for travel expenses for traveling to the office? i would have a 50 mile commute each way if i weren't to relocate. and this way i could live with the parents and save on rent for a little while. The gas would cost quite a bit though. I have heard of people being paid when they have to travel for work...but what about traveling to the office?
thanks for any help!!!! |

It really depends on what type of job you are in, but I doubt you are going to get them to pay for a 50+ mile travel expense every single day. You may be able to negotiate for them to provide you with a hotel room for about a month or so while you look for a place to relocate to, but even if they were to pay for the gas of your 50 mile trip, is that really the most logical thing to do. You're going to lose so much productivity in the travel time, just imagine if the traffic is bad. You are potentially looking at a couple hour trip in rush hour. Personally I would either look into relocating further, or look for another job, but honestly a 50 mile commute is not something you want to do everyday.

Did you discuss the topic of the wage, and travelling expenses in the interview?
When you went for the job, did you know where it was, and how far away from your home?
I think it comes down to how you negotiated the offer - if you accepted the job at the stated rate, then somehow I think you're going to have to make it work...
Without knowing more about how the negotiations went, I think it's hard to really say one way or the other. I might be jumping to the worng conclusions???
