Hello, firstly, I am new to this site.
I have received a verbal job offer/promotion 1 week ago within the company I already work. I am a little concerned as there has been talk of needing to get the vacancy signed off now they have offered me the job - I would have thought they should have done that before interviewing?
How long is reasonable to receive something in writing? they have mucked me around before!
Many thanks! |

Hi,
I'm not quite sure what has happened here. Are you saying you've had an interview as well i.e. that the process has followed the usual advert/interview/offer process? If so, I can't see what the problem is can you be more specific? What do you mean by "signed off"? I've not come across that phrase before in relation to a vacancy. What I immediately understand from your question is that because you've been offered the position they need to take the advert for a vacancy down. I would have thought that was a positive sign Sorry for appearing a bit dense! |

Hi, thansk for answering.
The job was never advertised, according to them if they were not increasing the headcount within the department then they did not have to do that.
I was invitied to interview, interviewed and then verbally offered the job. I am just a little concerned about the not advertising bit and then my current line manager, who will still be my current line manager, saying they had to get approval for the vacancy. Perhaps he means salary? He is not too great at explaining things! |

It seems like they've been caught on the hop a bit. It's probably a budgetary thing. "Signed off" now sounds as if they're awaiting approval for the increase in budget your promotion would entail, so yes I would have thought that that should have all been done beforehand. However, I've worked in commerce and it's a bit like the old "duck" adage: serene and calm on the surface, frantic paddling underneath (anyone who works in the civil service won't understand that as it's usually the other way round).
You're obviously concerned so get it in writing from your line manager today stressing that you've been through an official process and would like to see it concluded as per the usual procedures. |

i agree with richard, make sure you look into other secure options and keep your eyes open in case the company has dificulties...which is not clear, you need to know..

It appears that until they get the approval, you wouldn't get anything in writing.
All you can do is ask them how long it will take to get the approval.
Are they asking you to take on the new responsibilities before they have approval? |
