True Navigation-
I think our users would like to know a bit more. This looks interesting, and we get some interest in jobs on cruise ships, so:
Readers please note True Navigation has provided a link which answers some of these questions, but not all.
http://www.navigationrecruitment.net/Cruise_Ship_Jobs/Questions.html
1. Is there a contract? If so, under what law is the contract executable? (There is a contract, more info needed)
2. Pay/retainer rates?
3. Commission would be the normal approach to auction sales. What sort of percentage is involved?
4. Any liabilities to auctioneers? (Like damaged stock, etc.)
5. Any insurance considerations?
6. Can you spell this out:
It's not clear from information provided, (unless I wasn't looking in the right places), how auctioneers sail. Are they paying for their cruise, and using the proceeds from sales as an offset? Or are you providing a berth? (That's on the link, accommodation and crew meals are provided, but could use some amplification.)
7. Employment on cruise lines doesn't have an entirely clean reputation, thanks to recent headlines. We have quite a few younger people on this site who might be interested, but what are the safeguards? Can auctioneers get help when they need it? Like emergencies, people problems, etc.
8. Getting help when they need it also applies to the work. What are the contact arrangements, 24/7, times, etc?
9. Does the employer accept any liability for employees should any compensation issues arise?
10 Are employees responsible for handling money? (Like, is there a direct debit/whatever payment system) If so, what are the arrangements? |

Good day,
Thank you for your inquiry. AS you said many of the questions can be answered on our website: http://www.navigationrecruitment.net
Let me trya nd answer what I can at this stage:
1. Is there a contract? If so, under what law is the contract executable? (There is a contract, more info needed)
Yes there is a contract. More info after interview is conducted.
2. Pay/retainer rates?
Pay- Commission based.
3. Commission would be the normal approach to auction sales. What sort of percentage is involved?
This will be discussed after interview is conducted.
4. Any liabilities to auctioneers? (Like damaged stock, etc.)
Auctioneers are covered to damage and stolen to a degree. More information once interview is conducted.
5. Any insurance considerations?
Medical insurance is your responsibility.
Auctioneers have food and lodging paid for. This is one reason why people are able to save money while at sea. When you first start off as an associate, training to be an auctioneer, you may share a cabin with someone in your department.
7. Employment on cruise lines doesn't have an entirely clean reputation, thanks to recent headlines. We have quite a few younger people on this site who might be interested, but what are the safeguards? Can auctioneers get help when they need it? Like emergencies, people problems, etc.
Yes, I have worked on board hsips personally for 5 years. I have never had a problem. Security on board work with you, there is medical facility on board etc.
8. Getting help when they need it also applies to the work. What are the contact arrangements, 24/7, times, etc?
Contact to Managers on land is available 24/7. We live and work all over the world in every different time zone, we have to be available.
9. Does the employer accept any liability for employees should any compensation issues arise?
I am unclear to this question. This would be discussed after initial interview.
10 Are employees responsible for handling money? (Like, is there a direct debit/whatever payment system) If so, what are the arrangements?
We do not handle money directly. We charge the guest account on board and they settle with the front desk agent. We also provide a credit plan in place for guests looking to pay in installments, etc.
I do hope this helps anyone interested. Please send a cover letter and resume to info@navigationrecruitment.net

True Navigation-
Thanks for that. Nice to know somebody with onboard experience is involved.
Readers-
The job is sales-based, on commission. Some people really thrive on sales work, others don't.
It's also an introduction to auctioneering, which can be a very lucrative career, with room and board paid. That's quite a saving on cruise liners, really cuts overheads.
The commitment of time is a consideration. Some people can make commitments like that, for others it would be difficult on a regular basis.
The questions I asked are all related to conditions of employment, backup, and responsibilities. It's good to know there's 24/7 contact, because asking someone is a lot better than guessing.
If you don't have medical insurance, get it, make sure it covers this work situation. Paying upfront can be very expensive.
The compensation issue relates largely to situations were an entitlement is claimed. It's basically a legal question, and refers to situations which can arise in relation to employment. Relatively rare, but comes under the heading of "know your rights".
Basic travel considerations apply. Make sure you can handle getting home with your own resources, and that your contact with home is good. Know how to contact your consulate if you need help.(Web search will find them easily enough).
Check it out, and have fun. |
