What are the most important leadership skills I need to show in order to get a chance at a promotion in x months time. My boss is about to retire, he is 55 years old. I have been working in the same department as his right hand for the last 4 years. The problem is there is a left hand as well. A contact in HR told me that my boss and the HR manager will be running a leadership skills analysis on both myself and my competitor. Now I suppose this means that they evaluate our leadership skills. We are both pretty much equal in terms of knowledge on our particular industry. So leadership skills analysis is just a fancy name really nothing more.

How do I my leadership skills without being bossy ?
How can I be the winner of the leadership skills analysis test ?

I know the answers to the above and I would like the ideas of other people first before I post mine.

I work in the state of Texas.

After some research on leadership skills analysis I have come up with the following qualities that a leader should have:

Confidence in oneself and self peace
Have good People skills
Respect people and use all resource appropriately
Generate a time spirit. Keep people in the loop etc.
People recognise you as a leader, charisma.
Know how to work by the book, and know when to close the book
Creative, Innovative, do not let apathy set in the office
Think and plan ahead

The plan is to show my leadership skills, in every task I do and hopefully the job will come naturally.
