Hi All,
As mentioned in my introductory post I'm looking into relocating to England.
I was thinking of writing to my previous employers as I know they have been advertising.I'm not in a position to start working yet though.
Now I'm not really sure of the correct etiquette when writing as I was always on first name terms with this recruitment person (he wasn't in this role when I knew him before) Also I haven't kept in touch with any of the people I used to work with either and he would only remember me by my maiden name.
So how do I write this "letter of interest?" Question

This is a bit trickier than it looks. I can tell you from experience that reestablishing working relationships over time is sometimes difficult.

I'd suggest direct contact well before relocation, because the UK is currently a hard target for employment. You'll need good contacts, and the more current information you have, the better.

Since you're not ready to start working, you can do a simple straightforward email, reestablishing the connection, saying what you want to do, and that you're interested in work. Anything that can be done needs as much lead time as you can get.

(Wouldn't recommend hard copy, too slow from UK)

This is a hybrid approach between cold canvassing and a letter of interest to an employer.

The big advantage is that you're not asking for anything but information. You're not doing a "Hi there, remember me from 16 years ago, can I have a job" approach, which would probably be fatal.
