Employers look for lots of things, namely experience, skills, and how you present yourself to them. Make sure you have a great cover letter that goes with every resume you send out, and that the resume is current and built in proper format. Then, make sure you act properly during the interview. There's a lot to the whole job process, it is not just one magical thing that makes it happen.

Luke-
The lack of response isn't unusual. It's more a reflection of their way of doing things, which tends to be El Cheapo Mucho, to the extent of emails and the cost of a stamp.
What you're seeing in the lack of responses reflects what is actually a pretty slapdash system in practice. It's certainly not infallible, and it does make mistakes. Don't blame yourself for its failings.
Some employers have to do it properly:
Government agencies, in particular, are obliged to go through the right processes. Some don't, but most do.
Major employers tend to be a lot more efficient. Following up on an application, where you have a contact, won't hurt. The jobs tend to be a lot better, too.
Checking with the contact person beforehand, is a good idea too, check out the job, make sure you're not wasting your own time.
Fact is, that you're going for one job, so if you do ten applications, nine of them become irrelevant anyway. Stay focused on the objective.
Meanwhile:
lexa made an important point. The cover letter and the CV are the attention getters. They're also all the employer knows about you.
Similarly, the ad is all you know about the job and the employer. Some ads don't give the message properly, some raise questions.
If you're not sure, ask. It can't hurt, and can save you a lot of time.
When checking out the job, make sure you're clear on what the employer wants. That's more likely to cause problems than anything else. What the employer wants must be in the CV and cover letter.
Good luck |

Yeah, it is all about the CV. Most of the time tha is th first thing they look at, and they only spend several seconds skimmming it. This is why it is vital to not cram too much into it. Then, they lok at the cover letter and learn more about you. Try to make sure you include what they are looking for as you go along, and do what you can to obtain personal contacts, as much as possible.

| well i think it would help if we knew what field you are looking at, but at the same time the job market is pretty bad these days, as it has been ever since we went to war, so hold on until we get a new president and see where our economy will go. Much luck |
