Hello everyone,

I have been lurking around the site and thought I would say hello!

I am currently looking for a new job/career and am trying to find a direction.

Where I am now... currently I work for the fed. government, doing claims adjudication work. I am at a fairly high level, responible for reviewing and approving work done by others, conducting training, doing official reviews (and some other quasi management duties, although I am not officially management). I have also been successful, moving up fairly quickly since I was hired, receiving numerous awards and recognitions, and having knowledge that I do have promotion potential down the road.

However, I am reaching a point where I no longer feel this job is for me. Pay and benefits are decent. I am not getting rich, but not living out of a box either. So I cannot really complain.

The work environment is bad. Upper management is very adversarial with staff. Morale overall is extremely low. Also, the position I have seems to take the brunt of responsibility, being used as an excuse for incompetance by employees under the position, and a dumping ground for work by management. Also, although we have a very worthy goal, the other external events happeining leave it very unfulfilling. The combnation of these factors have made it a very stressful environment for me, and I feel I need a change.

The change is what my issue is with, and I know I need a direction to head in. As I mentioned, I currently hold a history degree. I enjoy history, and took it as my degree program as much for my enjoyment of the subject as anything else. I did have a goal of turning it into a teaching career, but realized fairly early on that I wasn't going to last in a classroom full of kids.

I guess my biggest issue has already been turning my degree into something I might really enjoy.

In talking with a bunch of people, I have come across a masters program in sports administration, some of the possibilities with it sound intriguing. However, my fear is that most careers branching out of this will lead to management positions, and one thing I do know is that I have little interest in managing people. I am good at making decisions, but I do not feel I have the patience with people to manage them. Especially a large group. So I am not really certain this is a direction I should pursue either.

I know what I really need is to set a firm goal and direction for getting there. It just seems to be exceedingly difficult to do.

I will suggest writing out your goals and either placing them in a place where you have to focus on them several times a day. A better solution is if you make yourself write them out several times a week or once daily. This way you will get more specific, focus on them and speed up the goal attainment process. But if your job is making you that miserable it is time for a change.
