You're being "educated" by someone with a personal script, but not much else in the way of training knowledge. A behaviorist might be able to decipher those very uninformative comments, but do you want to become a psychologist?
(1) doesn't mean anything. It's an expression of his position, not substance. The other comments also have this tone.
This is how he knows to do things, and how he knows to handle staff, and there's obviously not a lot of possible scope for improvement there, with this approach to management.
(Actually, it horrifies me that such inarticulate people are left in charge of human beings.)
Best tactful way to deal with (2) is to check out any precedents, however lousy those precedents may be, and stick to "established methods".
Not because they're likely to be any good, but because he'll be in the position of being able to say he's working in accordance with company policies, and prove it.
Just say "I wasn't sure, so I had a look at how we handled this one, which is pretty similar, and had a shot at doing it like we did this one..." You can't really be in the wrong with this approach. Particularly if it's an adaption of one of his letters.
This sort of stuff isn't worth any conflict re (3). Try not to be driven up the wall with this guy's banal mentality and lack of input into his own problems.
Finding fault with things is an art form for some people, but I'm wondering if the guy can see that if you don't know what you're supposed to be doing, that's his responsibility.
I would add that anywhere near this guy is unlikely to be where you'll start moving upwards. Just neutralize him as an issue, and move on. |
