Just Got fired

I would like to write about my experience in a small company and why I got fired.

I started working for this company 8 months ago. I was working as a general manager in charge of customer relations. I was the first manager to be recruited in this family run business. This family is of first generation Greeks, I never thought anything of it and really I thought they would be easier to work with than the standard WASP American boss.

But things turned out very differently I have 19 years experience in management and I could see trouble coming from the first week working there! I thought of trying to get my old job back, but that was impossible.

I am not sure why, but the other managers especially the general manager treated me as an outsider, I guess this is the problem with family business.

But in my experience I had to fire people and communication in employee relations was the number one cause of having to let go of staff.

So please those of you who just started a new job understand the importance of nature and importance of communication in employee relations or you will soon be job - LESS

There are other reasons to get fired :
Like not doing your work
Bluffing too much in your resume and interview!
Not supporting your manager against other sections
Trying to outsmart your boss and taking his "seat"

In my experience, lack of technical knowledge & not being professional are the no 1 cause of getting fired

Hi,

I agree here about how important communication is in any relationship whether at work or at home. I usually am a very good communicator having learned good speech skills thanks to a great high school teacher. I know how to communicate and I know how to diplomat if the need arises, and I know how to delegate tasks to others. I don't ever quit. As when you quit, you don't get unemployment. Unless of course one has another job lined up and you need to leave the other job to take the new job.

I doubt here this person above got fired due to communication, sounds more of a racial issue. Them being Greek and perhaps they have a way of doing things and their being a family company, well they maybe only wanted family in on things. I don't know the entire issue here, but I greatly do sympathize with you. If you are in the USA and can go sign up for unemployment benefits, go sign up right away the very week you get either fired, let go, or laid off.

Again, I am very sorry to hear you lost this job. I know it can seem like it's the end of the world when that sort of thing happens. The thing is, it's not, and it may be for the best as this job would have been a waste of your valuable skills and time. Better spend your time with another place that would appreciate your efforts and rewards you for what you do.

Next time though, ask them what type of a turn-over they have at their place of employment (I always ask that question at an interview), ask them why the last person left, ask them so many questions that you interview them. When doing so, you'll get to know them better and then YOU pick whether you want this job or not. If you only want permanent work with benefits, then ask them exactly what benefits they have. TELL them you are looking for a company that you could work at for several long years, as you are not the type of person to change and look for new work and that you need to make very sure that this is not a temporary position.

If you don't mind a temporary position, that's fine if you want that sort of thing. Just some things to keep in mind.

Good luck,

Tina
