I am new here and needed help from anyone who went through the same situation. I am recently move here in Texas from South Carolina due to Uncle Sam demands. Now, I am trying to look for a job but I am stuck.

What I need help with and need some advice is that in the past 5 years I did not have a job. The only job that I ever had in my life is joining the army for 6 years and now I'm out since Dec 2004 I just don't know what to write in a resume. I want so badly to look for a job to help out my family with finance but they always ask about my resume I don't have anything to show for.

What should I do about a resume?
Any ideas will be really appreciate.

Thank You

Need to respond in two stages, one about the resume issues, and the other about possible job paths. Also have some questions at the end.

Resume issues

This is tricky, but not impossible. The problem is partly the lack of recent materials on your resume, not just jobs, but also qualifications. The 5 year mark is also where skills start looking out of date.

The best way around that is to do some training, and start filling in gaps. Training is easy enough to get from community colleges, and some government agencies and community services groups can also provide training and work experience.

I don't know your specialties, or your qualifications, but you should be able to do an upgrade on them pretty easily. It's more a matter of how to do that, than any obstacle.

The bottom line here is to show initiative, current stuff on the resume which shows you're achieving things. Another positive about training is that most training comes with at least some leads about jobs. Trainers and course providers have a lot of local knowledge, which should be useful after your interstate move.

Jobs

To get around the lack of work issue, you might want to try:

Government jobs: Some are based on examinations, and you can sidestep the normal application process. The work history still has an impact, but you get your foot in the door.

Major employers: Most of the big name employers have good hiring schemes. With upgraded qualifications, you'll have some shots with them.

Internships: An internship can add some current work experience, and relieve your of the gaps. Even if the internship doesn't pay, it looks good. If it's a good internship, it will also provide references.

Questions:

Your service history:

1. Assume re-up is out of the question? There are bases all over the east, so you could stay relatively close to the family in SC.
2. Technical skills: Any possibility of using your military qualifications to get upgraded qualifications in civilian applications?
