Once unemployed how long does it take to become homeless. I do not want to sound meldrammatic but i lost my job 2 months ago my funds are running out, my rent is one month late and it looks like I will become home less. This is a series advert I am looking for any work in a print press. In my last job I was a print press manager but I was fired, the risk of becoming home less is scary I have no family and all I have is hope.

Jerry,

It really depends on your resources. I was able to survive 49 months of unemployment, but I used up every penny I had and all the equity in my home.

I was laid off in April 2001, six months before 9/11! I just became reemployed on May 23, 2005.

I am amazed that I was able to hang onto my home throughout this length of time.

I count myself fortunate that I had no major illness during this period. Instead of having insurance, I invested in a few medical books so I could self diagnose myself. You'd be amazed at the over-the-counter medicines available, just ask a pharmasyst to assist you in finding what you need.

However, there is a downside . . . I used up my entire life savings and spent all my 401K retirement money. I refinanced my home 3 times, so there's very little equity left.

I spent alot of time learning new skills, software programs and such, which helped me prepare for the new career I am beginning now.

I did some temp work when available.

I was overqualified for most of the jobs I applied for, and believe me, age disgrimination is definately alive in this country.

I wish you the best of luck, keeping a positive can-do attitude is essential. Keep looking for work, there are a lot of printing shops out there.

This is a tough issue here. First, are you getting unemployment benefits? Depending on where you are from, that usually lasts a few months. Then there are extended benefits. The unemployment office usually can help you find work. Go knocking on one door after another if you have to until you find something, anything, so you can eat and have a place to live.

Are you possibly disabled at all that you could apply for Social Security Disability? That takes many long years and I do not recommend it, but if you are sick with health issues or if even being unemployed and not having money to pay your bills and the risk of being homeless, well you may be getting sick just from all of that. Go to the doctors regularly and see what they say. Maybe they can find something wrong with you so you can apply for SSI or SS Disability.

Of course there are other things one can do such as go back to school. That takes money that you don't have.

For now, go to the library and learn as much as you can. Learn computers, let anything you may have any kind of interest in at books that you can read free at the library.

Go through the internet as there are tons of job sites looking for workers. Watch out for scams though there are more of those than jobs.
