Advice please, i have confused myself to the point of well.....confusion.
I can't seem to decide whether i want to be in the fashion industry or Medical field. Im in school right now working on my B.A., and the my plan was to apply to P.A. schools. Well, I've always enjoyed fashion/costume and I started in the industry when i was 13, i've done modeling, worked on movie in the wardrobe department etc. and it was a very exciting industry, but very inconsistent. So, due to the inconsistency I started getting interested in the medical field, and then I became fascinated and immediately decided to be a P.A.. But now that i compare the two career fields i start to get bored with P.A. but i know that i'll have a large consistent income. I'm in georgia as of now, but I do have the option of going to CSULA next Fall to major in Fashion Design and Textile, and with that degree I would like to become a costume designer for movies, far stretch i know, but i feel like it's something i can do. UGH.....i'm a very eccentric person that gets bored easily so, knowing that, i'm not so sure about P.A.,, but I dont want to have to be a scavenger for jobs as a costume designer.....Opinions.......Sorry this post is so messy, i'm in a hurry. |

You don't read to me like someone with a lot of endless patience for someone's hangnail. A major in Fashion Design and Textile can take you a lot further than just doing the odd movie gig, too. I've got relatives in the rag trade, and you can own your own business, be financially independent and buy a really nice house with those skills, if you know what you're doing.
As long as you don't get too starry eyed about it, fashion, and particularly textiles, can make you a fortune. Just remember that in the fashion industry you're occasionally dealing with let's say "eclectic" people, not to say actual professional nutcases, and that in textiles you're sometimes dealing with the sort of great humanitarians who run sweatshops in Cambodia. Stick to paying customers.
Hollywood, well, do you need to be told. The credits are professionally and commercially useful, but as regular work, only believe it after the checks clear. Production people can be cheap and nasty, too. The glamor is attached to the money.
You need to be very hard headed in fashion and textiles, to get anywhere at all. You will need formal business training, because this is a truly tough, dollars and cents, business. Don't leave everything in the hands of your accountant. Be able to do all the business side for yourself.
You will also need training in marketing, particularly advertising, and merchandising. Make sure you know how to work with retailers and wholesalers, and learn the garments market in depth, not just the magazine version, which only accounts for a relatively small percentage of the total market. You can make more money with a wearable design than a haystack with a hat on it.
Go into Fashion and Textiles, get your major, and learn the business thoroughly, every nook and cranny and crook and granny. |
