This was the closest thing I could find, about stress....I think you should mention little about it in an interview unless asked. If asked, be honest though. Don't let the fact that you have these issues stress you out. Instead, focus on trying to overcome them.

For starters you should address it to a real person and not use a generic titling on it. I think I would spice it up a bit too, it is kinda bland. It should not be a recap of your resume.
Thank them politely in the letter and state that you got a more lucrative offer from your current employer. Do not go into details, let them counter offer you if they really want you to work for them.

Those certifications could be very valuable to you, and work is not completely bad....I say talk to your employer and see if there is a way to make things better before attempting to resign. A good frank talk might make your situation better.

It sounds like you are angry and disappointed and need a career change. In the few lines I have read about you I get a sense of someone who would be happier doing something else. I don't know what exactly, but it is evident you are unhappy. Try to find a different career path that will make you happier and begin the pursuit.

I am not sure if the cruise liners employ their own slot technicians or if they have the machines taken care of by an outside company? It might depend on the cruise company. There are a lot of jobs onboard the ships that revolvoe around the casinso, however:

Looks pretty good overall.

Here are the things I noticed:
I think Economic should be Economics and this sentence can be tweaked a little: "My previous Investigator experience provided me with relevant investigation skills and fraud detection focus."

I would say "investigation skills" in another way. Maybe "provided me with keen analytical and examination skills as well as strengthened my fraud detection abilities"

It also seems that "I" begins almost every sentence. That is generally a cover letter don't. Try to reword the sentences so "I" isn't used so much.

"I understand and appreciate the key requirements (insert "of") being an Investigator and I anticipate that constant challenges will occur which will motivate me to strive for excellence. "

Also, explain what specific accounting skills will help you as an Investigator...

I'm just joining the board so I'm late in replying, did you already submit the letter? Any response?
I finally have a job interview coming up and i'm thinking about the "Why do you want to work here" question. Well, I'm interviewing at a university and one of the main reasons I want to work there is to pursue a Master's program that they have (and it's totally free if I work there). The Master's program is in the same field that I am applying for so if anything it would benefit them and all of the classes are in the evening. So should I mention that as a reason or is that in poor taste?
Hi,

I have a chronic illness, asperger's syndrome, dyslexia and dyspraxia but I have 2 excellent degrees. This makes me an interviewing nightmare.

Any advice on how to mention my disabilities and still get a job? I notice there's no section on what to do if you have had poor health.
Subject: Question About Job Hunting - Database??
Posted: Thu Aug 28, 2008 9:11 pm (GMT 0)

I know this sounds like a really weird question but here goes...I have been unemployed for almost 2 years - I have a ton of experience and education but my job history shows that I have moved around a lot - Never really fired, but moved from spot to spot. Is there ANY way a previous boss or employer could, in ANY way, post my name on some kind of "do not hire" database? Coule he/she make something up about me (Fired because of theft let's say) and publically distribute that untruth? It just seems odd that I have gotten about 10 interviews after sending hundreds of resumes - Unless my resume is really that awful...Thanks for your advice.
Posted: Thu Aug 28, 2008 7:00 pm (GMT 0)

Now my files have been brought out of the purged ones and are accessible. Back when I opened my claim I left that job due to a "labor dispute". I recieved benefits for 24 weeks and and the employer previous to that one stated "I left on my own with out just cause". Which of course would be correct as I found this other job, closer to home, with more pay. I then worked there for 9 months and left due to the labor dispute. I opened the UC claim which I was accepted for and the company I had the labor dispute with did not fight it as they knew they would've lost. Then came in the previous employer 5 months later and fought the claims determination. My recieved benefits were deemed illegal and a fault overpayment was determined.

job 1 (left found better work) -----> job 2 (left labor dispute) -> opened claim recieved benefits ---> job 1 states I left willingly and I lose benefits from the claim opened after leaving job 2.

So I am finding it hard to understand and feel like I am being wronged. I don't know what to do and there seems like there is no help out there for this situation. It just doesn't seem right that a previous employer should have the right to affect your claim from a current or most recent employer.

If anyone else has ran into a problem like this please advise.

I will tell you that one of the most challenging yet rewarding careers out there is police work, and there is none better than the FBI or CIA. I have a relative whose husband is an FBI agent and I know she used to get very upset in the early stages of their marriage because he would often be away on assignment and could not talk about his work. After a time, she began to understand exactly how her husband's work affected the lives of other people and not just herself, and became okay with it. My fellow has talked about taking a similar career path, as he is very selfless and focused on how he can make a difference in this world....at first, I cried. Then, my mindset changed. It takes a special person with unusual abilities to even consider such a role, as it is very demanding. I think you could be one of those people.
If you choose FBI or even local law enforcement, I think you will find that you chose well.

I do not know about the health requirements associated with the FBI, but it might have something to do with field work versus administration, and which area you would be placed in as to what health requirements are what.

I was not familiar with your type of cancer, so I looked it up a little. You are a brave young individual; I will pray for you and I wish you the best. It is my hope that you can overcome this and go on to make a difference in our world, as this world needs bright young people like you to impact it! Please take care and persevere, and come back periodically to let me know how you are....god bless.
Subject: i haven't been getting interviews, is it my cover letters??
Posted: Thu Aug 28, 2008 4:18 pm (GMT 0)

I've been applying for work since July 15th and not so much as one callback. Someone mentioned that maybe my cover letters are not professional enough. Maybe you all can just quickly glance at one and let me know what you think? This job is for an "Instructional Designer" at a university. I cannot find any sample resumes and cover letters online for this job title. anyway, here goes:

Dear HR Manager/Academic Support Center Team,

I would like to apply for the Instructional Designer position I saw posted on higheredjobs.com. I believe that my career path up to this point has been good preparation for a role such as this and my education in the field of Computer Science, with a Bachelor s Degree from ********, has also laid a good foundation for this role. I would very much welcome your consideration.

Not only am I a dedicated and driven individual whose skills are well suited for the job, but I know that my passion for technology would also be of benefit to the department. Over the past 5 years I have worked extensively in supporting and training individuals at all different skill levels in the use of many different computer hardware and software technologies from complex audio-visual applications to enterprise systems. Working for 3 years in a very busy Media Center and supervising and training 15-20 undergraduate and graduate students has strengthened my ability to work under pressure while fostering a healthy team atmosphere. My most current position has afforded me the opportunity to work one-on-one as well as in small and large group training sessions with students, faculty and staff to make the best possible use of the WebCT Vista course management system. Having had the opportunity to be in the classroom as an IT Instructor, I have come to appreciate the need for technology to be, not an obstacle, but an aid to exceptional teaching and learning and also a means towards efficient day-to-day operations.

I am also thankful for the years of intimate experience I have had working in higher education in both university and community college environments. I feel that this experience has given me a well-balanced, customer service oriented and approachable demeanor, as well as developed my communication skills and strengthened my sincere interest in helping to provide access to information.

I am excited about what I envision to be a creative, challenging, and refreshing role supporting lofty educational goals in a teaching institution. I can be reached via email (******) or phone (********). I look forward to discussing further what your needs are and how I might be able to contribute. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
cruz
Hi Kim,

I think you should remove this line "I have only 6 months experience of administration but would like to further develop this into a career and think this job would be the perfect way of furthering myself." It is not a good idea to draw attention to your lack of experience and even though you hope to get something out of the job, the cover letter is more about how the employer will benefit. Play up your accomplishments and maybe say something like "In only 6 months, I successfully ..."

Good luck!
Subject: finally got an interview
Posted: Thu Aug 28, 2008 3:43 pm (GMT 0)

yes, I have been applying to "entry level" programming jobs. The ones that say that they don't require any experience, usually they will say 0-2yrs of experience. but again, that is maybe only 10 of those jobs i have applied for. the other 40 are jobs that i do have experience in.

John, those are all good points, but how do i figure out which one is the problem? it could be all of those problems for all i know. just about all of the jobs require that you put your min and max salary so i am forced to do that in the application process. I've been putting a minimum of $40k, it seems reasonable to me but maybe i'm wrong... i guess i will go over to the cover letter and resume area of the forum to see if i'm doing something wrong with either of these two things.

all that being said, i finally got an interview! It is a job I applied for August 1st now I just don't want to seem too desperate because this is my only possibility right now... i really like this job and the company but they didn't list the pay so i have no idea about that.
I know I should write them a letter explaining why I want to deny their offer after I have already accepted it, but is their any advice that I should have before writing this letter?

Basically, I got an offer at a different company and when I accepted it I told my current employer that I was quitting. Well they offered me a promotion in order for me to stay.

What to do?
Subject: Advice for lost soul!
Posted: Thu Aug 28, 2008 11:50 am (GMT 0)

I hope someone can give me advice on what I should do next.

I graduated from university in June 2007 with a 2:2 class BSc(Hons) Degree in Mathematics and Management from a well respected institution. I have a big interest in the leisure industry, and prior to leaving university I had been doing weekly voluntary work at a well known museum. I was able to find work at a design consultancy that specialised in the design and implementation of new museum displays (I did not want to join a large graduate scheme or move away from my family home at the time).

I have been at the company for 13 months now. The company only consists of myself and my employer. I have found myself feeling less and less happy in the job, despite it providing me with useful skills that can be transferred to many job roles (e.g. liaising between clients and suppliers, project management skills, using the Sage bookkeeping computer programmes etc).

I'm now at a stage where my unhappiness (in both my work and personal life, I have little social interaction due to not working with a large team whilst in work) are bringing me to halt physically and mentally.

I now regret saying in my interview for the job that ideally I would like to stay in my first job for approximately two years to gain vital work experience that I have been unable to acquire before.

I am contemplating handing in my resignation, but I'm unsure whether I have jeopardised my chances of receiving a good reference from my current employer by saying about the "two years of employment" in my interview. My written contract does not state that I am employed on a two year fixed contract, but my employer mentioned it in passing earlier this month that the projects in the business next year will depend on if I am still employed there.

On my future prospects, I am currently working towards being Sage certified by doing a self taught course. I would like to attempt an accountancy course, either with part time employment/on-the-job training, or as a second degree at my local university, as I have enjoyed the book-keeping and budget management aspects of my work. I do not have any large financial outgoings as I live with my parents, and only have my phone bill and car bills to pay for (I have been putting money aside every month for my car insurance payments, so have enough saved for the next 12 months). I have been able to save a large portion of my salary over my employment.

What is the best way for me to go forward? Should I write a letter/have a discussion with my employer about my worries before I contemplate resignation further? I do slightly worry that this would cause tension in the work place though.
hey great resume buddy.... but I think before sending resume you need to do perform some groundwork in terms of where you wish to go (which vertical) and much more. Personally speaking I know about a great book which helped me alot when I was in this phase namely No More Ramen by Nicholas Aretakis. See if you can get one for yourself.

where to start. i have 11 GCSE's and 4 A-levels, i went to uni to study hospitality but never graduated as i got drawn out by the promise of big money in pub management. Being a landlord nearly killed me with the hours and alcohol so i went into mobile phone sales for the past 3 years. I'm now 25.

The problem is i feel stuck in a rutt, i have no job satisfaction at all and its a real effort to get out of bed in the morning, im constantly unhappy and angry which is affecting my relationship and i'm permanently tired. I need a change

I'm the sort of person who likes a challenge, i class myself as a decent leader and without meaning to sound big headed im a fast learner and intelligent bloke. However i turn into a petulant child if people patronize me, i don't have the mentality to do the same job day in and day out, i need variety otherwise i lose interest and i need a certain level of wage to be able to afford my commitments etc. I just dont know what to do!!! Any help would be much appreciated
Sometimes you can find freelance work via the internet to do. I will caution you, that any sites asking you for money up front as an 'application fee' or otherwise is a scam and don't do it!

Try looking for freelance websites that post jobs.

If you have some cushion in your savings to try out this plan then I say go ahead but if you do not have some extra funds in your bank account it could be very difficult to pull off. You have ot get experience somehow though, even if it is this way now or this way later. Judge how well your finances are and base it on that partially.
