Hi all,
I know it's a bit rude to ask a question for my first post on the forum but I really would like some input on this one if possible.
Ok so I left school at 16 and got a job for 3 years, I then left employment and returned to education and am currently studying for a degree at Sheffield Hallam University, Uk.
I have not had a job since returning to education, however I have been supporting myself through the running of a part-time online business which is still in operation.
I was wondering whether I should include this part-time business in my CV or whether potential employers will be put off by this with the thinking that it may distract me from my job, or for any other reason?
Any input or thoughts on this would be great.
Thanks
Joe |

That's what we're here for.
Definitely include it where relevant to the job, because it shows initiative and that you have business skills in that area.
In some cases that's a definite positive, particularly online businesses, because many employers aren't yet comfortable with it, and want advice or at least people who know the ropes.
However, your point about a distraction needs to be considered. Some employers (government agencies in particular) have rules about other work. They tend to be wary, particularly about anything online, as much because they don't want to be included in blogs, etc, as anything else, (which shows how much they know about it) but you'll have to assume a level of ignorance on their part.
Check it out with the contact person, just say "I have a part time online job", or just "I have a part time job" might be better, and see what happens.
If the reaction sounds Neanderthal, you haven't told them much. You can afford to be a bit vague about details. |

Thanks for your reply.
The online business if definitely relevant to the job I am applying for so I shall put it in.
One more thing is I have a few pages on one of my websites that show I have the skills required for the job. Should I give a website address in my CV for them to look at or not?
Thanks

Sorry for delay, my browser was on the blink, couldn't see my own replies for a while.
Yes, if you're also showing you have some business skills, good idea to have the link on the CV.
In this case you're also showing them that you've got useful experience, and won't need masses of training. That's a saving to them, and added value to you as an applicant.
Good luck, |
