I dont mean to crash your thread.
I'm stuck in the same situation, I just recently graduated from university and been looking for job for some while now.
I've got interview for 12 month intership at networking company.
My problem is I booked holiday almost 2 years ago for my sisters befriends wedding which is on 27th Dec 2008.
Also did this because my best friend is moving back to portugal for good (from the UK) on the 12th dec (literally grew up with him from age of 5) thought be great way to say bye before growing get celebrate new years.
Now we booked it from 12th Dec to Jan 12th (extremely good price £8 , tickets are now £417 when checking.
Also my birthday on the 11th jan so this was going to be like my big final holiday if you know what i mean.
so i'm kinda confused on what to do and also read its good to mention this with in your cover letter.
any advice would be great thanks |

In my opinion an internship is a different cup of tea.
If this holiday is an absolute priority then, do mention that you are ready to take this as un-paid leave.
if you really want this internship do mention that you are ready to cancel if this holiday would result in you loosing the job.
I would not mention who exactly is the wedding I would just say "family wedding".
Your sisters friend does not sound to important to an outsider.

Hi Paddy-H,
I see no reason why you should not be upfront with them and tell them. Explain the situation and how it was setup 2 years in advance. This is probably not a deal breaker unless they feel you "must" be there for the first two weeks of January (if I am understanding the timeline correct). Generally speaking, the interview process for internships is more slack than a regular position unless it is a highly competitive internship. Regardless, you gain little by lying here and worse you would be starting off on the bad foot even if you got the job. Many employers understand that there is life beyond the office walls. I would recommend you just explain the situation and how you are willing to work around it.
Hope this helps,
Mark McCormick
