Hi,

I would greatly appreciate some advice on my CV.

As a software developer, who has been involved in a number of different businesses over the past 15 years, I would now like to use my skills in the Finance industry.

This is mostly out of a personal interest to be involved in the kind of software development work that goes on in that particular industry. Finance is also something that is growing very rapidly right now, here in Hong Kong, unlike in the US.

I have been advised to look for an entry level position as a software developer with a large stock broker. My aim would be to build up some experience in equities business, and then "graduate" into derivatives afterwards. The problem I'm facing now is that almost every headhunter I talk to says that I am over-qualified.

So, with this in mind, I have re-composed my resume (see below), to de-emphasise the more senior roles I have played in the past, particularly those related to management.

I would be very grateful for feedback from the experts here, as I have just been laid off from my previous job (the company closed), and have a family of three kids to feed!

Many thanks!

Regards,

Graham.

Working Experience

8/2005 – 6/2008
Company: VideOnline Communications Ltd
Location: Hong Kong
Final Position: Product Development Manager
Company Background: Video-on-Demand (VOD) Services

VideOnline offers online movie rental services in Hong Kong and Mainland China. I have had the opportunity to take a leading role in development of their web based service, in all areas from content ingestion (input), database, rights management, to the web portal used by customers. In return, the company has rewarded me with two promotions in the almost three years since I joined.

Managing the development team has been extremely challenging and rewarding, from both technical and people perspectives. However, the overall business model did not prove to be successful and the company is now about to close. Hence, it is time to move on.

5/2001 – 7/2005
Company Name: Newel Systems Ltd
Location: Hong Kong
Final Position: Senior Software Consultant
Company Background: Software Development and Consulting

In this position, I initially offered web consultancy, secure email hosting and programming services, and later moved on to developing software products related to network security and remote PC support.
I am pleased to have had this experience, because I have been able to improve myself in many areas including project management and public speaking skills.

12/1994 - 5/2001
Company Name: Momentum Internet
Location: Hong Kong
Final Position: Technical Development Lead
Company Background: Internet publishing and online marketing

Momentum was one of Hong Kong's earliest "dotcom" companies.
In the early years, I coded many of Momentum's online applications myself, including PINmail (one of the world’s first web-based email systems), MEDIAhits (an automated banner advertising system), Search Dragon (a business oriented search engine, focusing on the Asia Pacific Region). This gave me an opportunity to gain extensive insight into Internet programming and the Linux operating system, which we used on all of our web servers. Later, once the development teams were established, we also ventured into other areas such as SwifTrade (an online stock trading system, for the US and HK markets), which provided real time news and stock price updates using live data feeds from Reuters (Triarch) and AFX Asia.

Your CV is excellent. I think downplaying yourself in this instance was a wise move, especially if the feedback you have been given is that you are overqualified to be working for most of the companies that you have applied to. Try this Cv out at a few places and fine tune it from any feedback they may give you if necessary.

I agree with lexa, do not down play yourself. In Interviews I did, the most important point I wanted to see from ex-managers who wanted to apply for a non manegerial role. Is that they could take orders. Meaning they would act as a non manager in this post. The nightmare for a manager would be to employ an employee who will start taking over things!

Another idea is to find a job in a small company in which you can play a dual role. The problem is to find such a role of course. I think this way you can keep your salary level.

cv and lexa,

On cv's point about not acting like a manager, I have absolutely no problem
with that, as long as I feel I'm learning something in the process.

Thank you for your replies and advice. Both very useful.

Graham.
