Hi all this is my first post. I have a second interview coming up. I have been told that should i be offered the job the start date would be before August, maybe early August. The job is a junior position so is not an emergency position for them to fill.

What are my chances of getting the start date pushed back to early September. I am genuinly looking forward to the working for the company but a September start would be much more convienent for several reasons. One is for personal reasons and another because i already have a holiday booked for mid-August to early September (booked several months ago) and wouldn't want to be out of pocket or take holiday time so early on in employment.

What do you think my chances are? Any advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks for your help.

Sorry, but the strictly traditional advice has to be that the holiday will have to wait. It's not really a good enough reason, and you could blow the job if you do that.

Your best shot here is asking them, while making it clear to the employer that if it's not possible, that's it, you'll start as required.

The danger is that they'll just get someone who will start at that time. These lower end jobs attract a lot of applicants, so you do still have competition for the job, if you push the issue.

The personal reason may also be an own goal in the making. The way round that is that you can, truthfully, say you asked if it was possible to get that holiday time in, but they said no. Just make it clear that you were booked, and ready to go, but you really didn't have a choice.

Hi Pauloz. Thanks for the reply.

I think my best bet is to tell them the truth about the holiday. Ask if there's any way the start date could be pushed back. If not i will start when they want. I in no way want this to jepordise the job itself, so i will always side with the job offer, obviously!

Does this sound like a good plan?

Definitely. You can at least show you're putting the job ahead of the holiday.
