    Job site reviews Newcastle UK

We regularly get inquiries from people in the North about jobs, particularly at entry level. This is a quick rundown of some sites which can help job seekers.

The North of England is famous for its unemployment. Ironically the economic history of the north since the Industrial Revolution is of very tough times indeed. Not a lot has changed at the start of the 21st century, apparently.

I checked out some local sites, and found that

    (a) There really aren't too many jobs around
    (b) There are low vacancies in just about all sectors.

That said, some sites are specializing in locations, and combined they seem to come up with roughly the number of jobs you'd expect to find in a local job market.

We may not be able to change the economic state of Newcastle with a site review. We can at least give the northerners a few sites in one place, though, and save you some clicking.

Adding to the complexity is that Newcastle is really a regional job market, not just the city itself. There's quite a large area around Newcastle which is a part of that market, and it's not exactly commuter land, unless you're a masochist. Check these sites out, and you might save yourself some suffering.

    Local recruit.co.uk

This site is very simply laid out. There's a central column full of links to other job sites, useful in its way, including 5 all sector sites. The Monster, Totaljobs, reed.co.uk and gumtree.com links do lead direct to Newcastle job ads, so you can hit those direct from localrecruit.co.uk There are also specialist links to other sectors, including IT, accounting, hotels and catering, and insurance.

Local recruit.co.uk also provides a range of ads and links, all of which are potentially useful, particularly if you're trying to get things done, and setting up your CV, etc.

The big plus about a job site like this is that it provides a lot of material for jobseekers on one page. Many sites are laid out so you can waste hours or days just searching. You can apply direct for the jobs through the links, and the forms are very simple.

    Mynewcastlejobs.co.uk

This is a much more local flavor, a Newcastle specialist, which if nothing else means the Novocastrians won't be getting lost in the regional jobs links. The local touch will be appreciated, because the site has good location based search system.

This site also provides CV templates, and, surprisingly, a series of links to other UK regions at the bottom of the home page, which would be handy to Novocastrians looking for work in specific UK regions.

It's not a flashy site, but it'd be a good site to check out regularly. Everything is easy to find, and you can skim through what you need quickly. One thing very much in this site's favor is the long list of job advertisers, including the RAF, on the right of the page. It's the sort of site you'd bookmark on principle.

    Newcastle City Council

The Newcastle City Council is doing its bit. It's advertising jobs, and there are a few in the entry level zone. Council jobs are worth watching, not only because of the local element, but because they can be good additions to your CV in many types of work. Government jobs are considered "known factors" by employers, and your experience is valuable, particularly in other government and NGO jobs.

This is the sort of site which would also be good as a local directory. You can hit everything else from the NCC home page, and they've been kind enough to provide an A- Z page for whatever you need.

    1job.co.uk

This is a quite different site to the others, and looks a bit too search engine oriented, (you'll notice the URL includes search info) but it does have quite a few jobs. It also has regional jobs at the bottom of the page, which will save the regional job hunters some time.

This site picks up ads from other advertisers, notably reed.co.uk , but it puts a lot of material where you can find it. That's sometimes a better option than wading through site after site, and you could use it as a search of itself.

We know you guys up there have been doing it tough, hope this helps.
    Paul
