Internships are advertised like jobs, often on professional sites, or in specialist magazines. You make an application like a job application, but the terms of employment are different. In many cases internships are unpaid, and you earn experience and skills, which are valuable in their own right at entry level. Some qualifications require graduates to complete an approved internship for practical experience.

Apprenticeships are formal training, with pay, usually in trades. You require pre apprenticeship training in some skills, and you have to apply for the apprenticeships, too.

    The differences:

Most internships are short term, single periods of employment with the internship provider. They're jobs, basically, with training programs built in. Apprenticeships are training, but also studies. They can take up to five years, including formal academic studies and in many cases post trade qualification studies.

Of the two, apprenticeships are far better structured and organized than internships. All apprenticeships are covered by law, and all are accredited nationally. I've recommended apprenticeships to people as good, reliable, training and qualification schemes, and that's why.

The top level internships are really well planned and structured. An internship with a big name employer is a passport to a good career, at entry level.

Not all internships, however, are this good. We've had people on the site complaining about truly dismal, unproductive, internships. You need to pick and choose, and make sure you're getting an internship which has some value in career terms.

I agree with a previous post. I recommends that you go one step further by looking into doing an internship abroad in order to really make yourself stand out. Internship abroad would provide you with a broader perspective and better understanding of the global market. If you are really serious about becoming an intern, you should get more information on it. You need to visit websites that cover the subject in more detail.www.howtobecome.info

    Hi members:
I have done my 3 month internship in the field of banking. I worked in Allied bank Pvt in the field of general banking . Most of my responsibilities were to handle the customers who came to apply for checkbook and ATM cards. I was responsible to issue them these two items. I have learned more and more about this field as i can make my career in banking sector with taking more responsibilities.

I’m not sure if you are still looking for an internship, but this site http://www.cv-builder.co.uk/internships.php gives a great outline on internships!

The porblem with internships is that they are rapidly becoming a source of free labour for companies battling with the recession. That isn't fair only the inter, especially if a job in't lying in wait at the end of it. All it does is restrict those from poorer backgrounds from becoming interns, which is a bad thing for the economy.

This is the most important thing about it. Internships are advertised like jobs, often on professional sites, or in specialist magazines. You make an application like a job application. It is very important.

I have recently applied for internships with multinational businesses and the application process is very intense and thorough! I did a long application form which went along with my CV, followed by an over the phone interview, a full days assessment center (which included tests, presentations, group work and interviews) and then a further interview! The role was for only 2 months, but it such a thorough process as they get you to work as everybody else works in the company as you will not simply be making coffee and filing all day!!
