My boss resigned... now what?

Hi all, I could use some advice. I live and work in the US in a hospital IT department. I have been in my current position about 2 years.

I just found out that my boss has resigned. I also know that he is very angry with the administration here and could be looking to "stick it to them". The problem I am having is that he has not shown/taught me all the processes of my job function. He has kept some on them to himself for reasons that are not very clear to me.

Next week is Thanksgiving and he will only be here a couple days (not nearly long enough to teach me ANY of the processes).

How do I proceed from here? Wing it? Tell his boss and risk getting a demotion because I do not know all the critical processes he performed?

Any insight would be greatly appriciated!

He's resigned and has only to vacate the premises, right? And "upper managment" is clueless that you, thanks to your now ex-boos, don't have thorough knowledge of your job requirements.

In what way is that your problem?

What you're seeing up-close and personal is one of the oldest, and tackiest, games played in the workplace, that of keeping at least one small aspect of the job from everyone else because you've convinced yourself that makes you irreplaceable. The added bonus, as you're seeing, you have the chance to give a former employer one last "screw you" as you walk out the door.

But as for what *you* should do? Nothing. Ain't your problem. And that's exactly what you tell them, period, end of discussion. After all, your boss sounds like a jerk but, at the same time, you might be getting a better glimpse at what's really going on at your job. After all, "something" happened to piss him off that much.
