    Deciding Major help!?

    Hi!

Which one of these options will have the best starting salary and future career:
a.) Bachelor of Commerce - Information Systems - Minor in Computer Science
b.) Bachelor of Commerce - Finance - Minor in Computer Science
c.) Bachelor of Computer Science - Management and Business Systems - Minor in Business

    Is minor an important factor?

    Thanks guys!

    Extra info: I'm from Canada.

    Hi ian,

Which country are you in? Minors do tend to help, as it makes you more well-rounded and you can bring more skills to a job. It can be what gives you the extra edge over another candidate.

I'm not sure which of those majors will give you the better starting salary, but according to Payscale, the highest paying jobs for people that have a Bachelor of Commerce tend to be in finance: Chief Financial Officer and Financial Controller. Although right behind was Project Manager in IT.

Perhaps knowing which country you're in will help me find more info for you.

    Ian,

My biggest suggestion is to do something you are honestly interested in.

You've listed 3 pretty different paths that you can take:

    * IS is going to often going to take you down the path of computer systems versus code development.
    * Finance is definitely going to take you down a business path, perhaps accounting, banking, financial planning, etc.
    * CS, depending on the school and degree, will likely take you more down the development path versus the IS path.

That being said, once stepping away from college you could end up doing anything. But you should try to use college to learn subjects that you can utilize later in your career.

It sounds to me that computers are really where your interest lies. Having some understanding of business is always great, but start down the path that you honestly enjoy and you'll end up succeeding.

Ian,I know this decision is more confusing for you, but you go in such a field in which you are interested. Actually, I don't know which is the best but according to me, if you do anything with interest, practice and hardwork, you get automatically success and can earn money as much as you want.

As mentioned above, B.Comm in Finance would give you the opportunity to earn the highest pay right out the gate. This assumes you're shooting for the infamous Investment Banking role, where an all-in 6 figure salary is not out of the question (first year out).

The minor in computer science wouldn't be as important as your grades/extracurriculars in landing a job here though.

My advice, for what it's worth, is don't go into computer science unless you really love it. I've talked to a lot of recent grads that say its really hard finding a job these days unless you're really talented. So if you really love programming and want to dedicate your life to it, I wouldn't do it. Let me make it clear though, I don't have a CS degree and have not experienced the job market personally.
