I worked at my previous job from March 2008 until December 2009. I was notified in October 2009 that I would not have a job there after 12/31/2009. I accepted another job at a consumer finance company as a management trainee. I started on December 7th. My previous employer gave the official word that I was let go involuntarily. I am already set up to receive my previous insurance benefits at 35% of the rate that my employer previously paid for my coverage.
I've worked at the new job for exactly one week and I've decided that taking it was a serious mistake. I took a 25% pay cut, and I've discovered that after I'm trained and relocated in 12 months, the company will terminate me if I don't turn delinquency around in 3 months.
This new employer is so strict with its attendance policy that I really cannot make the time to go on any job interviews. I would've been better off filing for unemployment and working for cash on the side while searching for a better position.
I had a friend advise that I resign from the job and pretend that I "just don't get it" - in other words, act like I'm incapable of performing the job duties adequately.
I also have moral objections to working for a company that charges 39% APR on personal loans to poor people that don't know any better.
Is there any way I can still qualify for unemployment benefits? I'm located in Mississippi, BTW.
