Question Should I ask for a pay rise?

Hi everyone I need a bit of advice, I hope someone can help

I started a new job in late 2010 and I have been there nearly 8 months now.

I am working hard and my employer is generally happy with my work, although he has said that I have not progressed as fast as he had hoped, although this was more the fault of the firm than myself and we are going to sort this out in the coming months.

I am due a 1000 pay rise in August but I am currently only on minimum wage (18-21 band) and I don't think its enough in comparison with other very similar positions. I feel I should at least be on Adult minimum wage as I feel I am at least worth this and could get more elsewhere. My employer does pay around £1000 in course fees which are essential for the job as well.

Do you think I could ask for a rise to the adult minimum wage when it’s going up in August (it would be a total rise of about £2000)?
