Advice on becoming a CNC operator

    Hello

I have reached a point in my career where i feel its time for a change and I am looking to train to be a CNC operator. I am a carpenter and joiner by trade and i have also worked as an aluminium fabricator. I have had 3 jobs in the last 18 months all of which have ended with redundancy. I have now been out of work for 2 months have applied for over 40 jobs and not had a single interview. I feel the building industry is in taters along with many other industries at the moment and feel it is time for a change in career.

I have decided im going to look into a career as a CNC operator and i am looking for some advice as to how to enter the profession. If anybody can offer me any advice on where to start i would be very gratful as i have trolled the internet and all i can find are posts for qualified CNC operators not trainee. Also what qualifications are required will i need to do an engineering course? Any help would be appreciated thank you.

    Hi IBaloo,

It's great that you're taking the initiative to undertake a long-term path.

I don't have specific knowledge of CNC operating, but a quick Google search reveals some resources that can help shape your thinking:

    http://education-portal.com/cnc_operator.html
    http://education-portal.com/cnc_operator_degrees.html
    http://www.bestsampleresume.com/resu...or-resume.html

From reading around, I get the impression that, in addition to engineering, learning computer programming can also help a career path in CNC operation. Also, I get the impression that attending a physical school is better in terms of accreditation than taking online courses.

You may want to ask companies directly who employ CNC operators what they look for in such a position.

    Good luck!
